I'm playing an elf mage, and no matter what I try I can't get any of the chests in Ostagar open! When I go into the forest the first time with Jory and Alistair and Davith, they've all disappeared by the time I get back! Tried maxing DEX, maxing cunning, stealing for keys, but no dice. Any advice??


In Dragon Age: Origins only rogues can open locked items. The stealing skill only allows you to pick pockets, but don't worry you don't have to wait too long after Ostagar to pick up a rogue Loleil 01:10, December 11, 2009 (UTC)
This is very odd since there are chests in areas that no Rogue will ever be able to visit. In addition the codex doesn't mention anything about lock picking being a Rogue only skill, nor does Deft Hands specifically say anything about it being for lock picking, merely that it adds a bonus to it (+10 cunning) - it's very odd either way. Okay, I am going to assume the above was sarcasm, Jmjimmy, which others may not understand it to be. Yes lock picking harder chests does require a Rogue only skill and though there are some areas that only the PC (Warden) may go, most places can be revisted with a party member who is a Rogue (Leliana or Zevran). So, in short, some locked chests may never be openned if you are playing as a Mage or Warrior, regardless of how high your cunning skill is (the only one in play afaik in picking locks) but they are few and non-essential loot oppurtunities. 02:05, January 20, 2010 (UTC)
Not sarcasm, more confusion over a very odd design choice on the developers part. It's almost like they intended anyone to be able to open chests and last minute decided "nope, only rogues!" and didn't bother to remove/update the early game. Jmjimmy

a knock spell for high tier mages would be nice, because sooner or later zevran or leliana wont quite cut it if you're not devoting talents to the deft hands tree. I dont really see where your confusion comes in, it seems kinda clearcut to me that warriors beat the crap out of things, mages blow things up that are surrounding the warrior, rogues steal the enemy's armor, rob their house, poison their family, spend their gold on a drink or two on the way back to the battle and backstab them while they're too busy fighting the warrior to realize they're naked. Unless they're in the fade or the basement, you should be able to return for them later. and I'm not entirely certain you cant go back to the basement as a mage when you revisit the tower. theres also the "added for flavor/realism" probability, where the chests arent intended to be opened, they're just there to give the illusion of heavily guarded mage treasures. 21:19, January 23, 2010 (UTC)
