Forums: Index > Wiki DiscussionAbout J.Hepler and those insults... Wiki response?
Note: This topic has been unedited for 4433 days. It is considered archived - the discussion is over. Do not continue it unless it really needs a response.

It's a bit difficult for me to put the thoughts together... Well, about this [1] blog... Some of the supposed DA fans showed a great deal of immaturity, outright idiocy and went totally over the edge in attacking one of DA writers. Shouldn't we respond somehow? With an opened letter of support from the Wiki? And show that DA fanbase on the whole consists of intelligent people, and we care for those, who create our favorite franchise? An example. Our trusty affiliates from Mass Effect Wiki wrote a letter [2], complaining about "Deception's" numerous mistakes. This and many other fans' complains started a civilized discussion [3]. Everyone benefits. Now, I'm not talking about criticism, but rather support for J.Hepler and DA writing team in general. I don't think, that we, one of the largest and well-known DA fan communities, should sit idly, when all that sh*tstorm is going on. Thoughts? I'd very much like to hear the admins opinions as well.-Algol- (talk) 20:42, February 22, 2012 (UTC)

I wholly support this idea. ----Isolationistmagi 21:03, February 22, 2012 (UTC)

Sounds nice. good idea Algol--Calle Cousland (talk) 21:11, February 22, 2012 (UTC)

I also agree that it is a good idea. Asherinka (talk) 21:18, February 22, 2012 (UTC)

I personally agree with it if it's done in the manner of individual users signing their user names. Basically in the format of a petition. I only say this as we had a discussion a while ago about wiki representation outside wikia, and the consensus was that it was best not to elect a spokesperson to represent the wiki. If we can build a consensus here, I'd ceetainly sign my name. Chantry symbol King Cousland | Talk   21:21, February 22, 2012 (UTC)

I have to say that I agree with what KC said about "wiki representation outside wikia", so instead of calling "Official DA Wiki..." or something like that we can represent ourselves as a group of members in DA Wiki who want to show support to her. But since we are trying to a good deed here, may I suggest to create a blog (so everyone can actually sign it) in this Wiki mentioning our support to her. Then deliver the link with a note. If necessary we can notice regarding this in the front page so it will get users attention easily. Anyway kudos to Algol for bringing this idea. -- Snfonseka (Talk) 03:46, February 23, 2012 (UTC)
Well, not that I meant a spokesperson or something, just a person who'll write the letter text, and then individual users will sign their names, just as you propose. I would love to write it myself, but I have to admit, that I'm not good at this sort of things.-Algol- (talk) 21:43, February 22, 2012 (UTC)
I had in mind something along the lines of simply messaging a dev at BioWare Social with a message such as: Some of us at the wiki would like to declare our support for Jennifer Hepler at this no doubt difficult time, and wondered if you would be kind enough to pass along our messages of support? And then the signatures. My apologies if it feels like I'm hijacking your idea Smiley Chantry symbol King Cousland | Talk   22:12, February 22, 2012 (UTC)
No, no hijacking at all. This would do nicely, if someone organized said messages, or wrote a message people could sign. Because I don't even have an account on BioWare social:(-Algol- (talk) 22:16, February 22, 2012 (UTC)
If we can build a consensus (which it seems like we're well on our way to doing) I'd be willing to deliver the message. I assume everybody who has given their support here would be willing to have their username added? Chantry symbol King Cousland | Talk   22:23, February 22, 2012 (UTC)
Of course. (Speaking for myself here.)----Isolationistmagi 22:30, February 22, 2012 (UTC)
YES. Thanks for volunteering for delivering a message-Algol- (talk) 22:49, February 22, 2012 (UTC)

I support this as I wrote earlier. Asherinka (talk) 23:35, February 22, 2012 (UTC)

-- I was thinking of doing something like this too. I'm glad to see I'm not alone on this. I personally don't see the big deal at all with what she said. I work at a Starbucks, but I don't really like coffee. She likes her work and she does it well. Who cares if she actually enjoys playing games? I'd like to throw in my support as well. Thank you for this. :) --98.151.222.92 (talk) 23:46, February 22, 2012 (UTC) TurboTwistedFire

I VOLUNTEER my name. I dont care who worked on what, people shouldnt insult anyone as bad as they did to Jennifer. And for her reaction to those comments? I probably would say the same things if that were my personal twitter account. Crimpycracker (talk) 05:00, February 23, 2012 (UTC)

Count me in, too. Wandrew (talk) 06:34, February 23, 2012 (UTC)

What those "fans" did was pretty messed up, so I'm definitely for showing a little support to Helper and the rest of the DA team while also showing that the majority of us gamers aren't huge d-bags. TKismyname (talk) 06:59, February 23, 2012 (UTC)

I add my name to whatever petition / letter in support of Jennifer Hepler the wiki puts together. My attitude: Do you want to make constructive comments about how to positively improve a franchise we all love, and hope can be great? Fine. Do you want to make personal and horrible attacks against an individual working hard at her job? Totally, utterly unacceptable, and no place for it at all. We should condemn it. --NickyStuu (talk) 16:18, February 23, 2012 (UTC)

That. If you want to nail down DA2's shortcomings, sure - but attacking the woman like that, and harrassing her for months, is plain SICK. - This wiki has been a rather safe and civilised place, and I totally agree that we should make ourselves heard and show that we do not condone such base actions.--Ygrain (talk) 17:14, February 23, 2012 (UTC)

What those fans did was outright embarrassing for us all and it should never happen again. I totally support this action. Something needs to be done.--JD (talk) 17:01, February 23, 2012 (UTC)

As a professional writer, personal attacks against an author over anything appall me. It's my worst nightmare, in fact. Especially in the world of "username" internet. Hepler's name is out there for everyone to see, while everyone else gets to be cruel and anonymous. Jerks. So please send her my support, with my real name. Suzanne Enoch. I don't really know the details. But if this thing is going to be about the insults and all that, I am happy to sign my name underneath it. But if it'll include good words about her work, I'll probably pass, because I don't want to sign something I don't agree with. Henio0 (talk) 18:01, February 26, 2012 (UTC)

People can be idiots sometimes, and bullying in any form is out of order, I've only seen a handful of the fake posts and comments about her, but i can't imagine how she must be feeling. Add me to the list. What those Sons of B*tches did was digraceful, and not right. She's poured her heart into her work and all she gets in return is hatred. No writer deserves that one bit. I haven't played DA2 but causing a life crisis isn't right one way or another. Jennifer, 99% of us here at Dragon age Wikia are routing for you. We're the mighty grey wardens and the haters are the soulless Darkspawn. AND they will fall by our swords. Phoenix96 (talk) 19:13, February 26, 2012 (UTC)

such people make us gamer look bad.. I support this.--Icemoomoo (talk) 10:19, February 27, 2012 (UTC)

I like this idea. I was thinking myself when I saw this if I were Hepler and this happened to me, it'd make very sad and a bit bitter. To get a letter of support reminding me of how kind people can really be would make it all worth it though I thought. So put me on the list man! If you need someone to write up something pulling our general feelings together, let me know, otherwise I think you should put a date to have it done by as I see it's been a week. Let's show BioWare we're not all like those losers. Xelestial (talk) 02:11, February 28, 2012 (UTC)

I am about to send the letter, which reads as follows:

Dear *dev*
I am delivering this message on behalf of a large group of users of the Dragon Age Wiki, who feel that the barrage of insults directed at Jennifer Hepler have been juvenile, unjustified, and unworthy of Dragon Age fans. In no way do we the undersigned condone such actions. We continue to be fans of the world you have created, and are just as appalled as you are over the actions taken against Ms. Hepler. No matter how one feels towards any aspect of the Dragon Age franchise, to go to such lengths as to attack Ms. Hepler on a personal level for such petty reasons is simply deplorable. I can assure you that we the signatories strongly condemn such unnecessary, vitriolic behavior, and we pray that Ms. Hepler is not negatively affected by this attack against her. As such, we would like to make a humble request for you to be kind enough to pass along our most sincere support for Ms. Hepler at this no doubt difficult time. We wish her the absolute best in the future, and it is our hope that this is the last of such incidents.

I have also created a blog per Snfonseka's suggestion, as I expect more users would like to show their support after the letter has been sent. Chantry symbol King Cousland | Talk   18:29, February 28, 2012 (UTC)
