Fenris is an elven warrior who travels alongside Hawke. Molded by his time as a slave, he is extremely distrustful of mages, and is more than happy to help fellow slaves. He is a romance option for either male or female Hawke.

Once a slave of a Tevinter magister called Danarius, Fenris is covered in a series of lyrium-infused markings, which grant him the unnatural ability to phase through solid objects, which is somehow connected to the Fade. Fenris often uses this ability as a weapon, phasing through individuals and solidifying, killing them instantly. However, these markings are also extremely sensitive, and touching them often results in physical discomfort. Because of this, he has an aversion towards being touched.[1]

However, the experiments performed on him also caused him to lose all of his memories. He fled to Kirkwall as a fugitive, hunted by the soldiers of his former master. Being a former slave himself, Fenris is happy to help slaves flee their masters or kill the ones who hold onto their chains. But due to his unpleasant experience with the Tevinter Magisters, he is extremely distrustful of mages, even friendly ones. He feels that they would do anything for power, and will inevitably succumb to the temptations that demons and blood magic has to offer.

During the quest Alone in Act 3, Fenris will discover that his name used to be Leto. If Hawke does not let Danarius take him, it will be revealed that Fenris's sister is, in fact, a mage. She mentions that life has been hard since their mother died, but does not say how. If Fenris spares his sister, he will also learn that he competed for the lyrium markings in order to free his mother and sister from slavery.

Act 1

Hawke meets Fenris during the Bait and Switch quest during which he reveals that he used Anso, who had hired Hawke's party for the quest's job, as bait to lure in his former master's bounty hunters out in the open. He may then enlist Hawke's aid in helping him clear out Danarius' mansion in Hightown so that he can confront him. Should Hawke refuse, Fenris pays Hawke and leaves; no longer recruitable or part of the story. Should Hawke accept, the party clears the mansion. Yet to Fenris' disappointment, Danarius was not there. He directs Hawke to the spoils of their battle and offers his services as payment for their aid. Upon completion of the quest he can join the party as a permanent companion. Later Hawke can talk to him in his former master's old mansion, located in Hightown. He stays in the mansion for the rest of the game.

Hawke can call on Fenris to use his special ability in order to interrogate and kill Danzig and to kill Kelder Vanard.

Act 2

Hawke can Speak to Fenris in the beginning of the Act.

When Hawke travels outside Kirkwall (usually to The Bone Pit or Sundermount) with Fenris in the party, there is a surprise encounter in which Tevinter slavers sent by Danarius's apprentice Hadriana attempt to recapture him. This ambush begins the quest A Bitter Pill. Fenris asks Hawke to go to the abandoned slaver den to face Hadriana. If his request is not resolved in a timely manner, the quest is automatically completed and Fenris permanently leaves the party.

Inside the cave, Hawke finds an escaped slave girl by the name of Orana and has several options of how to deal with her. Then, Hawke finally reaches Hadriana who attacks on sight. Once defeated, Hadriana says that Fenris has a sister and offers information in return for her life. Regardless of Hawke's choice, Fenris kills Hadriana. He temporarily leaves the party. You must talk to him in Hawke's mansion to complete the quest.

During Questioning Beliefs, Hawke learns that Fenris has obtained considerable knowledge of Qunari culture and practices; a result of him being left behind by his master after a battle between the Tevinter mages and the Qunari on Seheron. His injuries were treated by Fog Warriors and he spent several months living with them before Danarius returned to retrieve Fenris. The Fog Warriors refused to give him up, and Danarius was injured in the subsequent battle. Danarius ordered Fenris to kill the Fog Warriors who had defended him, which he did. He indicates regret at doing so, but apparently still had a lingering propensity to do as commanded upon the return of his master. It was this event that caused Fenris to leave his master, taking advantage of the delay in pursuit that Danarius's injuries offered.

If brought to meetings with the Arishok, Fenris has special dialogue that demonstrates his knowledge, which, in turn, impresses the Arishok. However, he also states that he is not a follower of the Qun. Fenris can also arrange a duel between the Arishok and Hawke if brought along.

Act 3

During his personal quest Alone, Fenris tells Hawke that he has obtained information about his sister and wants Hawke to go with him to meet her. After Varania talks about a few segments of Fenris's past, Danarius appears, revealing that it was a set-up. He promised to make Variana his apprentice in exchange for baiting Fenris. Hawke has two options: to turn Fenris in or to engage in combat with Danarius.

If Hawke agrees to betray Fenris, he gives up without a fight and permanently leaves the party. Later, Hawke receives a letter from Danarius stating that Fenris "is his usual compliant self now that his memories have been once again removed." Alternatively, if Danarius is killed, Fenris tries to kill his sister. Hawke can let him do it or persuade him against killing her. If Varania lives, she reveals that Fenris competed to obtain his lyrium markings and used a boon in order to free her and their mother from slavery yet states she resented their freedom as she was unable to cope with the hardships that came with it. She then leaves.

When Hawke reaches 100% friendship or rivalry with Fenris, he/she can talk to Fenris in his mansion. One of the dialogue options leads to him permanently leaving the party.

If Bethany / Carver are dead during Best Served Cold, Fenris can be taken hostage by Grace and Thrask.

After the destruction of the Chantry, Fenris advocates for killing Anders. In the final battle, Fenris always joins Hawke who sided with the templars. He also immediately joins Hawke who sided with the mages if he/she has 100% friendship or rivalry with Fenris and has completed his last personal quest Questioning Beliefs.

Otherwise, Hawke who sided with the mages meets Fenris in the Gallows courtyard:

  • If Hawke has any (0-100%) amount of friendship or less than 50% rivalry (1-49%) or exactly 100% rivalry with Fenris, he can still be convinced to join the party at this point.
  • If Hawke chooses any reply other than "Join me" or has more than or equal to 50% and less than 100% rivalry with him (50-99%), Fenris rejects Hawke. Later, he shows up with a group of city guards inside the Gallows and Hawke has to kill him.

Dragon Age: Inquisition Edit

Fenris Alive and Well: The Inquisitor can ask Varric Tethras about his fate. Varric will state that he's been killing Tevinter slavers preying on refugees.

Romanced Fenris: Later upon asking Hawke why they are alone, they will state that Fenris would have died to protect them, and they didn't want to give him that chance.

If Hawke survives the physical trip to the fade, Varric will state that Hawke told him to write to everyone in Kirkwall about Hawke's whereabouts, and that Fenris will want to know. Also, in dialogue with Varric and Cassandra, it is mentioned that they will likely join up again.

Dragon Age: Blue Wraith Edit

FenrisWraith

Around 9:40-9:41 Dragon[3], Fenris, now known as the Blue Wraith, and his Dalish associate Shirallas free elven slaves bound for the estate of Magister Nenealeus, near the Arlathan Forest. Shirallas thinks the magister wants the slaves trained as mage-killers, and volunteers to pose as one of them to learn those skills. Fenris dismisses the idea; Shirallas unhappily complies.

Four years later, Fenris is being tracked by Francesca Invidus, whose Magister father he has abducted from Fort Viridan. Francesca is accompanied by Vaea and Autumn the mabari. Vaea asks that she be the one to do the talking with Fenris, as they have a mutual friend. As the women stumble upon the corpse of a man with a gaping hole in its chest, Fenris appears, telling them it was a mistake to come.

FenrisFrancescaFight

Vaea stops the fight between Fenris and Francesca

Fenris’ fight with Francesca is interrupted by Vaea, who convinces him that they only came to talk. Francesca angrily asks about her father, accompanying her words with a spell that knocks Vaea off her feet but harmlessly passes through Fenris. From her power and use of plant magic, Fenris recognizes her as the Invidus girl, and tells her that he didn’t take her father. Shirallas, who went against Fenris’ wishes to become Magister Nenealeus’ newest mage-killer, did, and Fenris is tracking him.

Fenris refuses Vaea's offer of help, saying that he no longer has partners or teammates. When Vaea remarks that he was close to his team in Kirkwall, Fenris replies that they all went their separate ways in the end, and that people only use you for as long as they need your power.

Using Autumn’s tracking skills, Vaea and Francesca follow him to Magister Nenealeus’ estate and convince him to investigate before attacking. They find that the Qunari have taken the estate, led by a Viddasala, and are interrogating Nenealeus’ elven slaves as to his motives and whereabouts. The slave reveals that the magister has gone to retrieve a sarcophagus that infuses elves with lyrium. Hearing this, Fenris angrily exclaims that the sarcophagus was broken beyond repair, and attacks the Qunari. Fenris and Francesca kill most of them, though the Viddasala escapes. Fenris lashes out when Vaea touches his shoulder to reassure him, as the markings occasionally cause pain. He quickly apologizes.

Fenris frees Nenealeus' surviving slaves. He tells them that he'd be eternally grateful if they shared what they knew of his whereabouts, and a young boy volunteers the information. Fenris gladly accepts Autumn's offer of help and tells Vaea and Francesca that they can join too if they wish. They arrive just in time to help Ser Aaron's group in their fight against more Qunari and unstable test subjects. Fenris and Francesca chase after the caravan to rescue her father and confront Shirallas. When Fenris tries to question him, he says that he's close to possessing the power he originally sought and unleashes one of the test subjects, allowing the caravan to escape.

Magister Invidus isn't grateful to have been "rescued' by his daughter and attacks her. She's eventually forced to kill him to save Fenris, who stepped in to defend her. After the battle, Fenris offers to lead the group to Tenebris, warning them that they should hurry before Shirallas can get in the sarcophagus. Vaea points out that despite his insistence that he didn't work with groups anymore, he ended up joining one anyway.

Romance Edit

Fenris can be romanced by either a male or female Hawke. Due to his strong aversion to mages and blood magic, a Hawke looking to fulfill a friendly romance with Fenris must either follow his views on magic, or leave him behind on missions where the player will be siding with or aiding mages. If the player would like to pursue the rival romance, it doesn't matter if Hawke clashes with Fenris. In spite of his opinion of mages, Fenris will be no less attracted to a mage Hawke.

Act 1

During Bait and Switch, there is a conversation with Fenris after Hawke leaves Danarius's mansion. When Hawke asks why Danarius is after him, the first flirt option becomes available. Later, Hawke can talk and flirt with him in his mansion (Fenris Recruited). Also, if he is present in the party during the main quest Act of Mercy and Hawke chooses the dialogue option "I will help you", Fenris will give you a pleasantly surprised genuine smile.

Act 2

In order for the romance to begin, use the flirt options during the quest Speak to Fenris.

During the follow-up quest Questioning Beliefs, flirt with Fenris again. Friendship Romance: Near the end of the conversation, a flirt option to say "Just friends?" appears. Choosing this option adds a few lines of romantic dialogue.

Fenris is waiting for Hawke in the Hawke's mansion after killing Hadriana during the quest A Bitter Pill. He apologizes for leaving and follows up with a dialogue that leads to the option of letting/asking him to stay. If the Questioning Beliefs quest has not been completed, inviting him to stay will result in him saying that it's best for both of you if he leaves. If the Questioning Beliefs quest has been completed and the flirt option is chosen, they kiss and the scene dims to the Hawke's room. If he will not stay and Hawke completes Questioning Beliefs after that or if the flirt option is not chosen, once Hawke leaves and returns to the mansion, Fenris will be there waiting again to initiate a romance scene.

Fenris always leaves after the romance scene. He tells Hawke that during their night together, he experienced flashbacks to his life before lyrium was burnt into him. He sorrowfully claims that he is in no place to be with someone else (or that all he wanted was to be happy for a little while). If the player has romanced him successfully, he will be wearing a red band around his wrist and the Hawke/Amell crest on his belt.

In a party banter in which Fenris and Anders are following Hawke at the same time Anders will wonder what Hawke saw in him; he replies "It's done. Let it be.", yet afterwards he says it was the hardest thing he'd ever done.

If Fenris has been successfully romanced before All That Remains, he will appear at the estate to comfort Hawke, acknowledging that they need him.

Bugs:

  • The option "So you're ending it" ends the romance even though it doesn't have a "Reject" icon. Fenris will still wear a red ribbon and companions may still make comments suggesting a continued romance, but the corresponding scenes and dialogues in Act 3 will not occur.
  • Choosing to give Orana a job sometimes ends the Fenris romance entirely, causing him to leave when Hawke asks to him to stay. Reloading the save and choosing to give her money instead fixes the problem xbox360Icon xbox360. This problem did not appear on PC as of patch 1.03.
  • If A Bitter Pill is completed before Fenris's Act 2 Questioning Beliefs quest, it may not be possible to continue the romance because the flirt option will not appear. pcIcon pc Patch 1.04

Act 3

If you turn Fenris in during the quest Alone, you lose him permanently, thus obviously ending the romance. If Hawke defends Fenris, he laments that he is now definitely alone. Hawke can tell him that he has him/her.

After this, and once friendship or rivalry has been maxed out, the second Questioning Beliefs quest will appear for Fenris, requiring Hawke to visit him at his mansion.

In a Rivalry romance, Fenris will be pacing in front of his fireplace restlessly when Hawke enters the room. After angry words about his revenge "tasting like ashes", he will ask Hawke what he should do next, and after that ask for Hawke's forgiveness for ending the relationship in Act 2. Hawke has the option to forgive him, thus continuing the romance.

In a Friendship romance, Aveline and Varric will be there if you haven't spoken to Isabela yet, if not she will be there, trying to convince Fenris to find a better place to live. However, unlike Merrill and Anders, Fenris does not have the option of moving into the Hawke manor. Hawke can console Fenris at this point, and the option to state that he/she does not care what Fenris does as long as he is by his/her side will be available. Like in the Rivalry romance, he will apologize for walking out on the relationship in Act 2, and the option to forgive him is available.

If you successfully pursued a romance with another character after Fenris broke it off in Act 2, telling them that Fenris left you, this scene will still occur, but without any flirt option that would allow Fenris to apologize. He does, however, continue to wear the red armband and Amell crest for the duration of the game.

Talk to Fenris before the final battle to receive the achievement for romancing him. After the final battle, it is implied that Hawke and Fenris are to leave the city and go into hiding together.

Multiple romances

If you want to complete the romance with Fenris in Act 3, you can:

  • Flirt with any other companion in any Act.
  • Sleep with Anders or Merrill before sleeping with Fenris. However, after a night with any of them, you must choose the "broken heart" dialogue wheel option so as not to allow them to move in. (Confirmed for PC 1.03)
  • Sleep with Isabela, then with Anders or Merrill (but not both), and finally with Fenris (strictly in this order). Sleeping with Anders or Merrill after Isabela automatically ends the relationship with Isabela, but again, you need to choose the "broken heart" dialogue wheel option after spending the night with either Anders or Merrill in order to be able to sleep with Fenris. (Confirmed for PC 1.04)
  • Sleep with Zevran (who is technically not a companion).

However, you must not:

  • Sleep with Isabela, Anders, or Merrill after sleeping with Fenris. This will automatically end the romance with Fenris even if you break up with the other companion.

Bugs and workarounds

  • Sometimes, maintaining romance with someone else (after or even before sleeping with the person; for example sleeping with Isabela and telling her it was "Just for fun" and never flirting with her again) may prevent you from getting the "Just friends?" option in Fenris' Questioning Beliefs (Act 2) and therefore continuing his romance. This can be worked around by manually marking the other romance as ended in that character's debug dialog window (see Console (Dragon Age II)).

For the relationship with Fenris to proceed normally, you also want to Speak to Fenris before A Bitter Pill. So it is best to avoid leaving Kirkwall while romancing other characters for A Bitter Pill not to trigger. During the quest Blackpowder Courtesy, you technically leave Kirkwall for the Wounded Coast, but this does not trigger A Bitter Pill. Once you have finished romancing other characters, return to the Fenris's Mansion and Speak to Fenris.

DLCs

In Legacy, Hawke may mention (the only time it is ever talked of outside of Fenris's Questioning Beliefs quests) the night they shared together depending on the current Act and relationship status, but it does not change things between the two. Fenris also shows some eagerness for getting rid of Hawke's pursuers at the beginning of the DLC. He can also thank Hawke for letting him come along to help in an awkward tone-something most of the party notices. In Mark of the Assassin, Fenris can grow irritated if Hawke flirts with Tallis, and worries over Hawke's safety when they are captured with Tallis. Aveline will also express irritation over Fenris's fatalism if lost in the dungeon with him, asking rhetorically how Hawke puts up with him.

Depending on Hawke's actions, Fenris can:

  • Never be recruited
  • Leave if Hawke refuses to help him in Act 2 or asks him to leave in Act 3
  • Return to his former master Danarius and have his memory wiped again
  • Leave after he helped Hawke in the final battle (mages or templars side)
  • Stay with a romanced Hawke after the final battle (mages or templars side, romance)
  • Be killed by Hawke in combat in the Gallows (mages side, Approval/Rivalry not high enough + certain choices)
In certain world states, Varric tells the Inquisitor that Fenris is hunting down Tevinter slavers preying on refugees from the south.

Friendship with Fenris can generally be earned by siding against any mages, not coddling him when he talks about his problems but understanding them, being ruthless to slavers and being kind to the innocents--particularly elves and slaves--in the game.

Rivalry with Fenris can generally be earned by siding with any mages in the game, or by dealing with slavers. Notably, he will still side with you if you do choose to help the mages.

Trivia Edit

  • David Gaider wrote Fenris for Dragon Age II.[5] He also wrote the short story of Fenris.
  • Fenris is a name given to him by Danarius, meaning "Little Wolf."
  • Fenris primarily swears in Tevene, but occasionally will break into meditation-like comments on the fight. He has one of the few sound-sets that never actually yells during combat.[6]
  • Fenris has a particular dislike for fish as shown at the docks during quest Gamlen's Greatest Treasure.
  • Fenris states that he likes apples in a conversation with Sebastian Vael during Hawke and Tallis' mission to retrieve the Heart of the Many.
  • Fenris plays cards regularly, with Varric Tethras, Isabela[7], Anders[8] and Donnic Hendyr[9] among other people. In Act 3, he hosts a weekly game of Diamonback at his mansion.
  • In Act 3 and Legacy, if neither Isabela nor Fenris have been romanced, then party banter between Fenris and Isabela will suggest that they are in an intimate relationship, although it is apparently purely physical.
  • Fenris, as a former slave, never learned how to read. Dialogue with Hawke can open up the option to teach him how, which can lead to a comment by Hawke when selecting the bookcase at the Hawke estate in Hightown.
  • In Heroes of Dragon Age, "Slave Fenris" is classed as a rogue, rather than a warrior.
