The Wigmaker Job
Felicia learns from her connections that Lucanis Dellamorte of the Antivan Crows has accepted a contract to assassinate Ambrose Forfex. She and Crispin Kavlo go together to the Forfex estate to warn Ambrose, just before the start of his seasonal wig show. Crispin urges Ambrose to cancel the event but Ambrose mocks him, dismissing the concerns as overly dramatic. Felicia sides with Crispin, emphasizing that the threat is real and revealing the assassin's name. Ambrose recognizes the name, but then declares that he will send an assassin of his own against Lucanis and hire significant security for his party. However, Ambrose's security isn't enough to stop Lucanis. He kills Ambrose in his estate, along with over forty of his guests.

When they learn of these events, Felicia and Crispin go to meet with Magister Zara Renata, one of Forfex’s Venatori associates. They inform Zara that Lucanis was the man responsible, and that he has gained the nickname of "demon" as a result. Felicia expresses her concern to Zara that she might be Lucanis's next target. Crispin warns Zara that her position in the Magisterium puts her at risk as well. Felicia believes Lucanis will continue targeting Venatori. Zara assures them that Lucanis will be punished in due time, and in the meantime, they should practice patience. She notes that freeing Ambrose's slaves shows that this Crow has a heart, which will inevitably reveal other flaws. Zara promises to exploit every last one of them.
