Fearlings are lesser demons in service of a Fear demon. They take the form of the viewer's fear.

Background[]

Fearlings are manifestations of our anxieties and deepest fears. Born in the Fade, they are simple spirits that occasionally slip into the waking world where the Veil is thin.

"When Lieutenant Herve cut one in half, he started screaming about an imagined fire, The Templar with us waded in, looking for Mages who were not there. The second my sword pierced a fearling's flesh, I became consumed by thoughts of disappointing my mother. I told everyone I saw a Dragon."

—Letter from Lady Losaneta, a decorated Chevalier in the Blessed Age.[1]

Fearlings are encountered in the Raw Fade during the min quest Here Lies the Abyss. After meeting Divine Justinia V and advancing past the second clearing, the Nightmare will speak to the Inquisitor and their party. Afterwards it will unleash the Fearlings along the pass.

The Inquisitor and Hawke perceive the Fearlings as oversized spiders. Cassandra sees them as maggots. Sera describes them as physically impossible embodiments of nothingness.
