Enchanter is the title given to mages of the Circle of Magi who passed certain tests. Enchanters may specialize in a particular field of study or tutor apprentices.

Junior Enchanter is an alternative title given for the position.[1][2]

Background[]

The title of "enchanter" originated in the ancient Tevinter Imperium. It continues to be used by the Imperial Circle of Magi as well as the Circles of Magi that answer to the Orlesian Chantry.[3]

Circle of Magi (Orlesian Chantry)[]

In order to become an enchanter, all mages who live in the circles under the Orlesian Chantry's rule must go through a special test called the Harrowing. The Harrowing is a secretive rite of passage that is the cause of much fear and speculation among apprentices. All of their training and apprenticeship is meant to prepare them for the test, though they are never told what the test consists of or when they will be made to take it and as such must always be ready. When deemed ready by the enchanters, the apprentice is taken without warning or preparation to face the Harrowing.[4][5][6]

Mages who have passed their Harrowing and taken on apprentices are given the title of enchanter. The senior enchanters mentor the junior enchanters, who in turn mentor the apprentices–mostly children.[7]

A mage who has obtained the rank of enchanter can join one of the Fraternities of Enchanters.[8]

Enchanters have also been known to create phylacteries when apprentices first come to the Circle.[9]

Circle of Magi (Imperial Chantry)[]

To become a fully-ranked enchanter, a Tevinter mage must pass a series of tests at one of the Imperial Circles. They may also require sponsorship of a recognized mage.[10]

Tevinter Circles possibly employ a test similar to the Harrowing.[11][12]
