The people of Thedas often enjoy partaking in drink, and in some cases will even use various substances, both mundane and magical, to attain a high. Alcohol and drugs are usually consumed recreationally, but some may be used for professional or ritualistic purposes.

Alcohol[]

Alcoholic beverages are consumed extensively throughout Thedas. Drinks may be purchased at taverns to varying degrees of quality.

Absinthe[]

An anise-flavored spirit derived from herbs, once believed to be hallucinogenic.[1]

  • Absence – a type of absinthe created by distiller Emeritus Gaivon, who states "I am aware of how to spell it. This bottling reflects my wish that the current crop of behatted self-styled cads would disappear. I preferred la fée verte as spirit, not affectation."[2]
  • Petite Absinthe – Lady Aurelie of the Orlesian court was disgraced partly as a result of her unseemly affinity for the drink.[3]

Beer[]

Promotional art of Oghren holding an overflowing foamy tankard of beer.

Oghren drinks copious amounts of beer and ale.

Made with grain, hops, and yeast, beer is one of the most popular drinks in Thedas, especially among Fereldans and the dwarves of Orzammar. It may be watered, particularly by peasants trying to stave off the summer heat.[4]

  • Ale – a mug of watered-down ale, capable of being given as a gift.
  • Ander stout – kept in an oak cask, Donnen Brennokovic serves this "noxious" drink to a dark-haired nobleman.[5]
  • Barley wine – a strong ale[6] that ranges in color from red-gold to opaque black.[7]
  • Brakien Brew – a beer with a heavy head and a deep, rich taste available at Tapster's Tavern.
  • Brown ale[8]
  • Coconut draft – a drink proposed by a waitress in Tapster's Tavern in A Tale of Orzammar DLC.
  • Dwarven Stout – An Orzammar recipe brewed by associates of the dwarven Ambassadoria.[9]
  • Fereldan ale[6][10]
  • Fereldan beer[11]
  • Fereldan lager – a pale lager, Donnen Brennokovic pours a glass of this for an old soldier.[5]
  • Lichen ale – a toxic drink of choice among Dust Town dwarves.[12][13] It must be enjoyed in moderation due to its toxicity, as it can overpower those who are not dwarves and even the sturdiest of dwarves. There is a suggested safe alternative that is based on the original recipe.[14]
  • Lichen malt[15]
  • Oghren's homebrew – has an attractive amber color with a nutty flavor, slightly sweet, with a hint of toastiness.[16]
  • Qunari ale[17]
  • Valenta's red – the "Paragon of Ales" according to Corra in Tapster's Tavern. It is considered the best that money can buy.
  • Watered beer – used in provisions[18] and in daily meals.[4]
  • Wildwine – an alcohol produced by the Chasind. It is not actually a wine but rather a grain alcohol made from ryott, a protein-rich crop valued throughout Ferelden, obtained by the Chasind through trade with southern villages.[19] Wildwine is a favored drink among the Chasind. It is much stronger than beer[20] and of similar strength to Chasind sack mead.[21]
  • Wilhelm's Special Brew – this dark-colored ale gives off a thick, oaky smell. When swirled in its tankard, it takes on an unexpected glow.

Brandy[]

Antiva seems to produce the majority of Thedosian brandy. The Sweetsong Brandy Parlor in Val Royeaux is a popular tavern that caters to Orlesian nobility. A shady Orlesian trader possibly sells bottles of turpentine labeled as brandy.[22]

Cider[]

A drink made from fermented crushed fruit, typically apples. The Warden has the opportunity to drug the guards' cider during The Tears of Andraste.

Cocktails[]

The Gilded Horn in the Winter Palace is known to serve several cocktails,[33] spirits, and ales including Ferelden Ale.[10]

  • BenedictionProphet's Laurel gin served with a wedge of lime and a thimble of Golden Scythe.[33]
  • Daisy Fun-Time Lemon Gin - a juniper spirit flavored with local Antivan flowers and fruit, served with tonic.[34]
  • "Dragon Piss" – the name is probably figurative, but no one knows for sure.[2][35] "Dragon Breath" is suggested as alternative name for this drink, as it is served while lit on fire in the glass and additionally burns on the way down.[36] BioWare gives two recipes, one in the official cookbook which calls for raspberry brandy, sparkling wine, and blue curaçao liqueur; and previously on a Twitch stream, where it calls for "1 oz light rum, 1 oz dark rum, fill with iced tea".[37]
  • Elfroot mixed with dandelion wine – mixed in some Orlesian alienages to make a restorative draft.[38]
  • The Emerald Valley – made with a spirit distilled by Chantry sisters in Lydes from over seventy different herbs and flowers. Topped by egg-white foam dusted with nutmeg.[33] The resulting flavor is said to be varied, complex and fresh, like a lush green valley.[39]
  • The Golden Nug – a base of effervescent white Seleney [sic] wine sweetened with a dash of West Hill brandy and a splash of pomegranate juice. Muddled with raspberries and a sprig of Royal Elfroot.[33] The resulting drink is soft pink in color; the goal of this drink is to imitate the color of a nug.[40]
  • Grappaling Hook - an Antivan white liqueur with hints of elderflower, served with three coffee beans.[41]
  • The Hissing Drake – a bold mix of cinnamon-infused whiskey, dark Llomerryn rum, and Hirol's Lava Burst. Due to its fiery effects, this drink is not for the faint of stomach (or heart)![10][42]
  • A Night of Shame – our sweetest Antivan port with a dash of chocolate bitters and a twist of orange. Served in a flute of chilled Serault glass.
  • Orichalcum mixed with wine[43]
  • Posset – a drink made with hot milk curdled with ale, wine, or another liquor and is flavored with spices.[44]
  • Qun on the Rocks - a drink from the Drowned District of Treviso in Antiva. Rum matched with saltwater and seasonal Par Vollen fruit stolen from the Antaam.[45]
  • The Randy Dowager – rumored to have been concocted by the editor of Orlais' most scandalous periodical herself. A tall glass of Abyssal Peach liquor and fresh cream, garnished with sugared rose petals and served on a silk handkerchief with a scandalous rhyming couplet inked on it by the bartender.
  • To Cure a Cold – this cocktail is often used as a folk remedy for a cold. It involves boiling whiskey and adding lemon juice and crushed garlic.[46]

Mead[]

A beverage made from fermenting honey with water. The Avvar are known to produce mead,[47] as well as the Chasind. A surface family ships mead to Tapster's Tavern every month.[48]

  • Chasind Sack Mead – a brutishly strong honey liquor of similar strength to Chasind wildwine. The flavors are reminiscent of warm summer days and sour-sweet apple blossoms on the wind, with an unexpected aftertaste of a father going off to war, never to return. Bitter, to say the least. Another description says that due to the flavors of this drink, it contains the turning of the seasons in a single sack.[49]
  • Lady Odette Guillory's Family Honeywine[50]
  • Orlesian Honeywine[51]

Port[]

A sweet, fortified red wine, typically served with dessert, from Northern Portugal in real life.[52]

Rum[]

An alcoholic drink distilled from sugar. Popular with pirates like Isabela.[54][55]

  • Alvarado's Bathtub Boot Screech – if you can read this, you haven't drunk it.[2] Screech is a type of rum, though it can refer to almost any cheap, high alcohol spirits including moonshine.[56] Brewing liquor in a bathtub is a common moonshining practice.
  • Blackwater rum – served by the Glass Apple in Wycome during the Exalted Age.[32]
  • Dark Llomerryn Rum – a dark rum used to make The Hissing Drake cocktail.[33]

Whiskey[]

A dwarf in full plate armor and a helmet that covers the entire face.

The Whiskey Master in Darktown

A liquor distilled from fermented mashed cereal grains, usually corn, barley malt, rye, and wheat. Isabela will order the Hanged Man's finest whiskey for Hawke,[57] and will mention using shots of whiskey to revive fallen friends.[58]

Wine[]

Fenris commemorating the anniversary of his escape with a bottle of Agreggio Pavali

Wine is produced all across Thedas, but the most notable countries of origin are Antiva and Orlais. Chantries make much of the wine in Antiva,[59] though private producers like the Montilyet family are also in operation. A monastery in Montfort is also known for its wine.[60] The biggest importer of Antivan wine is Orlais, followed by Wycome in the Free Marches, despite having a third of the population of Val Royeaux. The Heartlands, the region located between Lake Celestine and the shores of the Waking Sea, is well known for its excellent wine and marvelous estates. Anders wine is apparently of notably poor quality.[61] Types of wine include red, white, black, and even yellow.[62]

The following information is only mentioned in Dragon Age Tabletop. Certain portions of this media may no longer reflect currently established lore.

In Vintiver, a village in Ferelden's wine country, the autumn harvest is a big event as people bring in the grapes and prepare the wine. A festival is always held, and all are welcome, residents and travelers alike.[63]

  • Agreggio PavaliDanarius used to make Fenris pour this wine for his guests as a slave in the Tevinter Imperium.[64]
  • Alyons blackThe Marquis of Alyons brings a few casks of the '38 upon his visit to Serault.[65]
  • Amaranthine red – a sweet wine, presumably made in Amaranthine.[66]
  • Antivan House Wine – A fine vintage produced by one of Antiva's famed wineries.[67]
  • Antivan red[68]
  • Bitter Black Wine[69]
  • Bottled Scar 5:34 Exalted – a rare collaboration between human and elf vintners.[70]
  • Celestine blackDivine Justinia V expresses a fondness for this wine when visiting Serault.[71]
  • Dandelion wine – the elves of Orlais usually drink this instead of regular wine, as they cannot afford vineyards or even grapes of their own.[72]
  • Elderberry wine – a type of wine prepared for Summerday feasts. According to Sister Theohild, Brother Caedmon tripped and fell into a vat of it and died shortly after.
  • Finale By Massaad – the last bottling from the legendary vintners of Ferelden before lands were divided. Tears on the glass as slow as the turning of a reluctant heir, as quick on the tongue as words that can't be unsaid.[2] Massaad is one of the names of the Revenants.
  • Flames of Our Lady – a wine with hues that range from blood to fire, always in that order. In the South, take a single draught, shout, "She is with us," and throw the remainder into a fireplace. In the North, draw steel and march.[2]
  • Flat wine[73] – wine that has been exposed to too much air and has lost it's flavor.
  • Ghislain red[74]
  • Iced wine[75]
  • Minrathous Red – Rich in flavor with hints of plum and spices.[76]
  • Minrathous White – A light and refreshing drink for humid Tevinter summers.[77]
  • Montsimmard white[78]
  • Mosswine – an astringent, toxic wine brewed from moss. Kalah Brosca is addicted to the substance.
  • Mulsum – a mixture of wine and honey served in Tevinter.[79][80]
  • Nevarran red wine[81]
  • Orlesian RedDonnen Brennokovic pours a glass of this for Lady Marielle.[5]
  • Plum wine[82]
  • Red wine[83]
  • Serault yellow[84]
  • Seraultine white[85]
  • Silent Plains Piquette – an artisanal treatment of a Tevinter slave wine. Grape pomace is soaked and pressed, then buried for a year under the wastes where the first Archdemon fell.[2]
  • Southern black wine – black as pitch, this wine was delivered by The Elegant Abbess[86]
  • Spiced wine – a popular drink in the Winter Palace since the Glory Age. Lady Savarin Ledoure's recipe calls for orange, lemon, apple, various warm spices, brandy, honey, and dark brown sugar; Empress Celene is known to add rosemary and substitute the orange with a pear.[87]
  • Val Chevin red wine[88]
  • Vint-6 the Common Red - a celebration of life, thick and sweet, served by the sip. Tradition says the more who partake, the greater the fortune, for no one is free until everyone is free.[89]
  • Vint-9 Rowan's Rose – delicate to the nose, comfort to the tongue, and, strangely, a half-remembered whisper to the ears. It is described as—and inspires—a wistful spirit. A vintner's opus.[2]
  • Watered wine[90]
  • White Seleney wine – most likely a misspelling of Seleny, a settlement in Antiva. A bubbly white wine used to make The Golden Nug.[33]
  • Yellow wine[91]

Other Spirits[]

Bottles-on-the-wall

Bottles in Skyhold's cellar

  • Abyssal Peach – not so much filtered as dredged. Should be kept in a cold, dark place. Also locked. Forgotten as well, if one is wise.[2]
  • Antivan Sip-Sip – a "mean" spirit popular among highborn who wish to seem dangerous, but more at home grasped by the neck by those who actually are.[2] It is speculated that it may be called a "sip-sip" as it is hard to drink more than a sip at a time, with each sip having to be "chased by a sip of something else", such as water.[92]
  • Aqua Magus – fine spirits infused with a bit of refined lyrium. Potentially fatal if ingested in quantity.
  • Aquae Lucidius – a rare and potent liquor made from wyvern venom,[93] served at Chateau Haine during Duke Prosper's hunting party. Tallis praises its hallucinogenic properties, mentioning how it causes the drinker to see "purple dragons in the sky for days".[94]
  • Bottle of Rotgut – a type of cheap or inferior liquor, typically diluted whiskey.[51]
  • Butterbile 7:84 – a hard liquor that is not so much served as it is brandished. Coarse and indifferent, it is to your taste, or it is not. The failing is yours if you cannot raise—or lower—to the challenge of a distiller told not to.[2]
  • Carnal, 8:69 Blessed – an Orlesian liqueur for the daring, or those who wish to seem so. Said to enhance sensation. And at the bottom, an erotically carved peach pit. The design is plain, but the bottler assures that the act of carving was scandalous.
  • Dew of the Dales - like it says on the label, spirits for the spirited, an elven elevation of the brewing arts. Sold only in Antiva, a guarantee that changes only slightly in other markets.[95]
  • Dwarven ale[96] – not actually an ale, but a black liquid reputedly made from fungus with a reputation as being almost undrinkable for anyone not a dwarf. Despite this, some humans manage to develop a taste for it. Oghren notes that Orzammar ale tastes like dirt in comparison to Fereldan ale, as dwarves put dirt in it.[97]
  • Garbolg's Backcountry Reserve – likely dropped to avoid seizure by authorities, or because of seizure due to drinking it. Garbolg only brewed from 8:74 to 8:92 Blessed, killed when the vapors in his beard spontaneously combusted.
  • Gin – a distilled alcoholic drink flavored with juniper berries. Prophet's laurel gin is used to make the Benediction cocktail.[33]
  • Golden Scythe 4:90 Black – this battlefield spirit maintains a chill even in direct sunlight, which it appears to absorb. Optimal serving is by the drop. Contact with exposed flesh is discouraged, but likely inevitable.
  • Kirkwall Select 9:36 – Few barrels survived the Kirkwall Rebellion, but this is bottled from one of them.[98]
  • The Heart of Spring – a "restorative" drink from Verchiel made with violets that Bastien de Ghislain once had, as mentioned by Vivienne. Surprisingly, Blackwall is also aware of its existence.[99]
  • Hirol's Lava Burst – a possible gift for Oghren, produced in Kal'Hirol. It is said to taste "like burning".
  • Maraas-Lok – a kind of strong Qunari alcohol; possibly also the verb "to drink."[100]
  • MoonshineHubert is a moonshiner based in Amaranthine. The Warden can steal his moonshine to give to the "Blight Orphans".
  • Port – a sweet, fortified red wine, typically served with dessert, from Northern Portugal in real life.[52] In Thedas, Antivan port is used to make A Night of Shame cocktail.[33]
  • Qunari Liquor – A brew whose casing is strong enough to withstand the heightened belligerence of its drinkers.[101]
  • Sun Blonde Vint-1Tevinter-brewed for a very discreet clientèle, and strong enough to fluster a tranquil. An almost weightless spirit best served with a powdering of catsbane as a flavor-enhancer and antidote.

Drinking culture[]

Alcohol is typically consumed during holidays, especially Satinalia, which is marked by wild merriment. It is also commonly featured at weddings and other grand celebrations.

Thedosians may engage in drinking contests to pass the time.[102] Isabela mentions playing a "short-lived" drinking game based on how many enemies the player has, and claims it killed a man.[103] Merrill mentions Isabela offered to teach her how to do body shots next time they visited the Hanged Man.[104]

It is said one can learn an awful lot about a dwarf by the mug they carried.[105] Grey Wardens have a custom of combining half-full bottles of alcohol to save space while traveling, the resulting drink taking on a flavor as unique as the Warden carrying it. These drinks are referred to as Grey Whiskey, Ritewine, or Conscription Ale.[106]

Snacks such as beer nuts may be served at the bar to accompany drinks, particularly at the Hanged Man. Varric warns Hawke to make sure they aren't moving first.[107]

Drinking songs[]

Iron Bull can be heard singing the "Bottles of Beer on the Wall" song during In Hushed Whispers.

The Bull's Chargers have their own anthem, sung together over drinks in the Herald's Rest:

"No one can beat the Chargers 'cause we'll hit you where it hurts.
Unless you know a tavern with loose cards and looser skirts!
For every bloody battlefield, we'll gladly raise a cup.
No matter what tomorrow holds, our horns be pointing up!"

Two male dwarves standing on a stage.

Dwarven performers in Tapster's Tavern

Dwarves at Tapster's Tavern perform a drinking song in Dwarven, translated through subtitles:

"Ooohh, I've heard of dwarves who get in fights 'bout every time they drink,
And those who need to have a woman just to help them think,
And if you want to see a dwarf whine and beg and plead,
Just pour out all his ale and take away his mead!
There's never been a Paragon of Wisdom or of Thinking,
And though I tried a time or two, I ne'r got raised for stinking,
But hang around here long enough and don't you go a blinking,
Cuz someday I am gonna be the Paragon of Drinking!"

Drunkenness[]

Rare antivan brandy effects

Zevran feeling the effects of repeated uses of the Rare Antivan Brandy

An inevitable consequence of excessive drink is drunkenness. Most individuals will exhibit the usual symptoms of lack of motor control, slurred speech, lowered inhibitions, or vomiting, but there are a few exceptions. Anders mentions Justice won't let him get drunk anymore, implying spirits can control a host's body to the point inebriation is impossible.[108]

Sometimes, an affinity for drink can become an addiction, particularly after a traumatic event. Oghren, Kalah Brosca, Lady Ilsa Tethras, and Ser Aaron Hawthorne are all known to be alcoholics. Ser Aaron drinks as a result of the trauma of the Battle of Ostagar, and Vaea tries to intervene and keep him from drinking.

Drugs[]

Almost no substances in Thedas are outright banned, and consumption of narcotics for leisure is especially commonplace among Orlesians.

Smoking[]

Two blonde women, one of them an elf, in the foreground smoking from a hookah. Alistair, Isabela, and Varric are in the background.

Two women smoking from a hookah at The Perfumed Spring in Antiva City

Among Thedosians, smoking tends to be more of an upper class practice. It is unknown whether tobacco is the most commonly smoked substance, or if another plant is used.

Elfroot[]

Elfroot, an herb primarily used medicinally in healing salves and potions, is analogous to the real-world cannabis plant. Its alternative name "canavaris" sounds remarkably similar, and the "medicinal qualities" of elfroot were rediscovered by herbalists in 4:20 Black, a fact mentioned by developer Patrick Weekes when asked whether cannabis exists in Thedas.[118] 420 is a number used to refer to the practice of consuming marijuana. A book in the Apprentice Quarters titled "This is Your Brain on Elfroot" is a parody of the U.S. based This Is Your Brain on Drugs anti-drug campaign launched in 1987, famously known for using a frying egg as a metaphor for drug use in one TV public service announcement.

Hallucinogens[]

Blood Lotus DAI2

A blood lotus plant

  • Aquae Lucidius – though technically a liquor, this substance made from wyvern venom can cause the drinker to see "purple dragons in the sky for days" according to Tallis.[94]
  • Blood Lotus – the blossoms release a hallucinogenic essence into the air. Comtesse d'Arnee's summer garden party featured four hundred and twenty blood lotus flowers (note the number being 420), leaving many of the guests asleep and one lady without several teeth after being convinced a marble statue was made out of cake.[119]
  • Lunatic's deathroot – most infamously baked into pies by the courtesan Melusine as an act of revenge, this plant causes terrifying hallucinations when ingested.[120]
  • Saar-Qamek – a Qunari poison gas that causes madness.[121]

Other drugs[]

Gamlen Amell says "if wishes were poppy, we'd all be dreaming" to his sister Leandra.[122] This possibly implies the existence of opiates within Thedas; drugs derived from poppies known for putting users in a "dreamlike" state of profound relaxation.

Zither mentions using mushrooms recreationally once and how they caused him to wake up a week later with a smashed lute and wearing only a crochet scarf.[123] Upon falling in Dragon Age: Inquisition multiplayer, Isabela comments on the experience being reminiscent of Merrill accidentally drugging her after making mushrooms for dinner.[124]

When combined with certain other plants, witherstalk may have an effect on the mind.[125]

Lyrium is a dangerous and highly addictive magical substance.[126] Some individuals may go on lyrium binges.[127]

Grave-mist is a magically infused vapor captured near tombs where spirits dwell. Emmrich mentions that it is 'supposedly quite invigorating'. [128]

Non-recreational purposes[]

A small box with one side containing a statuette of Andraste, and the other side containing various paraphernalia: including small vials of lyrium, a spoon, a curved blade, a scalpel, a small waterskin with a dropper tip, and a grinder.

A templar's lyrium kit

Mages imbibe lyrium to supplement their magic, and to enter the Fade fully aware during the Circle of Magi's Harrowing ritual.[126] The templars of the Templar Order are given lyrium to enhance their abilities to resist and dispel magic.[129] Prolonged use of lyrium becomes addictive, the cravings unbearable. Over time, templars grow disoriented, incapable of distinguishing memory from present, or dream from waking. They frequently become paranoid, as their worst memories and nightmares haunt their waking hours. Mages have additionally been known to suffer physical mutation: The magister lords of the Tevinter Imperium were widely reputed to have been so affected by their years of lyrium use that they could not be recognized by their own kin, nor even as creatures that had once been human.[126]

Elven somniari are said to have used sacred herbs ritualistically. Mihris tells of how burning them released a smoke that guided the dreamers into the Fade. Though Felassan seems to verbally cast some doubt on the validity of this claim, he personally uses herbs to go into a trance and enter the world of dreams.[130]

Trivia[]

  • Sera comes up with the idea to add ice cream to beer, otherwise known as a beer float.[131]
  • Hall mentions the Inquisition has more beer than expected.[132]
  • Tapster's Tavern serves 52 types of ale, 17 meads and 12 imported wines, a testament to the dwarves' long-standing love of hard drink.
  • Oghren's gift, the Beard Flask from Feastday Gifts and Pranks, is fashioned from a nug stomach to facilitate hands-free drinking.
  • Alistair and Leliana will comment upon drinking dwarven ale in location-specific dialog in Dragon Age: Origins. Wynne also professes interest in it in party banter with Oghren, and even develops a taste for it by the time period of Dragon Age: Asunder. King Maric Theirin also drinks it in Dragon Age: The Calling, having developed a taste for the brew himself.
  • According to Fenris, all Tevinter wine is made from the blood and tears of slaves. Hawke wonders aloud if he was being literal or not.[133]
  • Zither mentions having drinks on the beach served with little umbrellas.[134]
  • To cure a cold, a folk remedy says to boil whiskey, juice half a lemon, and used peeled and crushed garlic. Supposedly Grey Wardens swear by this method.[135]
