"Dog" is the default name of a male mabari war hound which appears as the Hawke family dog if the player has The Black Emporium DLC for Dragon Age II. He is different from Dog, the Warden's mabari in Dragon Age: Origins as he can be summoned as an ally who follows the party, akin to a Ranger summoning animals.

Involvement[]

As a mabari, Dog understands human language. The player can choose a name for him upon entering Gamlen's House and talking to Dog for the first time. Subsequent interactions with the Dog in Hawke's house triggers a cutscene which involves a dialog between Hawke, Dog and a third party (a companion or a non-playable character). The cutscenes serve as comic relief and reveals that everyone loves Dog, except Gamlen. Dog has his own small side quest in Act 3, called Beware of Dog, another comic relief device.

Dog is summoned by activating its sustained mode, and follows the party until dismissed, is defeated or until Hawke moves to another area, similar to Ranger summons in Dragon Age: Origins. Dog behaves like an ally but has a cyan halo circle and thus cannot be controlled. Dog does not acknowledge the "Hold" command nor does he trigger traps when running over them. He also does not benefit from party buffs, neither can he be targeted with any skills. However, his damage does scale (albeit slightly) with Hawke's level.

Notes[]

  • Despite Hawke's using masculine pronouns when addressing or referring to Dog, Dog has no visible genitalia.

Bugs[]

  • Occasionally, Dog will appear at the start of the game and follow you until you encounter the ogre, even if its DLC has not been purchased.
  • pcpcps3ps3 After naming Dog, when loading a save game where he is already summoned, his name will not be displayed correctly and he will just be labelled "Dog" again. However, if the sustained mode is ended and he is summoned back after the cooldown period, he will return along with his proper name.
  • pcpcxbox360xbox360ps3ps3 Sometimes when summoning Dog, it will not follow your party around and will stay put. This happens most often when Dog alone is attacking an enemy and someone finishes off said enemy from range. This can sometimes be solved by unsummon, and then summon him again. If the unsummon/summon does not fix it, then save and quit the game, then restart and reload.
