In lieu of armor and weapons, the companion Shale uses crystals. Crystals come in two sizes: Large Crystals act as armor and appear on Shale’s shoulders and feet; Small Crystals act as weapons and appear on Shale’s fists.

The golem can choose from among 50 different crystals, found in various locations:

Types & Quality

Crystals come in five levels of quality (from lowest to highest):

  • Chipped
  • Flawed
  • Clear
  • Flawless
  • Brilliant

There are also five elemental types:

  • Fire (orange)
  • Ice (white)
  • Electrical (purple)
  • Natural (green)
  • Spirit (blue).

If you match a large and small crystal of the same elemental type on Shale, the golem receives a special item set bonus. For example, two Brilliant Fire crystals offer 60% fire resistance (instead of the expected 50%).

Evaluation

Shale's crystals are some of the strongest equipment in the game. For example, small, Clear, Spirit crystals will give Shale +15% spirit damage, +2 to each attribute, and increases her chance of critical hits to as high as 100 as early as Level 8.

Small Crystals

Requires: 20 strength, Damage 5.50, Armor penetration: 4.60, Strength modifier 1

Fire: +5% fire damage, Converts all damage to fire damage

Ice: +5% cold damage, Converts all damage to ice damage

Lightning: +5% lightning damage, Converts all damage to lightning damage

Natural: +5% nature damage, Converts all damage to nature damage

Spirit: +5% spirit damage, Converts all damage to spirit damage


Flawed

Requires: 20 strength, Damage 5.50, Armor penetration: 4.60, Strength modifier 1

Fire: +10% fire damage, Converts all damage to fire damage

Ice: +10% cold damage, Converts all damage to ice damage
