Crime Wave is a series of quests received from Slim Couldry in the Denerim Market District. While not exactly a modern-day Robin Hood, Slim manages (through his shady dealings) to make enough scratch to support himself and give a little back to the community and needs the Warden's help in stealing from the rich.

Walkthrough

Note: The Warden needs either stealth or stealing skill for Slim to appear. If only the stealth skill is available, only the burglaries will be accessible. If only the stealing ability is present, both quest lines will become available, and may be completed using companions. Thus, it's advisable to acquire a level of stealing before talking to Slim for the first time, in order to open up these quests and their rewards.

During this series of quests, Slim expects The Warden to engage in a little cloak-and-dagger, namely, a little pickpocketing and home invasion. To find Slim, head towards the Chantry in the Denerim Market District - he is standing next to Goldanna's House (when facing the door, Slim is off to the left). Once Slim has been located, he will engage in a little banter with the Warden, eventually coming to the point to pay him money for tips on "merchandise" to swipe. The quests are divided into two categories: "marks" and "burglaries".

Note: If the Warden is a Dwarf Noble, all items acquired in both quest lines can be sold for DOUBLE the listed value if sold to Gorim. Example: Pouch of Gems in first quest can be sold for 2Gold instead of 1Gold.

Marks

Quest Name Mark Initial Cost Item(s) Location Walkthrough
Lady's Maid Lady's Maid 50Silver Pouch of Gems 1Gold Denerim Market District The mark is standing in the central bazaar of the Denerim Market District next to Cesar.
Ser Nancine Ser Nancine 1Gold Ser Nancine's Ornamental Sword Ser Nancine's Ornamental Sword 2Gold 50Silver
Wonders of Thedas Multiple options:
  1. Use the stealing option during dialogue.
  2. Use herbalism to convince her to remove her armor to be 'examined' then sell her a remedy for 2 Gold or use poison to sell her a sleeping (or deadly) potion 50 Silver.
  3. With coercion, talk her into hyperventilating and passing out. Results in no gold, only the sword.
  4. At least on easier difficulties, sending a companion with stealing (such as Leliana) will not initiate any dialogue, and she can steal the sword for you without the need for a conversation.
Note: If the sword is obtained during dialogue, it may be possible to pickpocket a second afterwards.
Master Tilver Master Tilver 3Gold From Tilver: Key;

From Chests: 2 Diamond, 5 Garnet, 2 Emerald, 2 Sapphire, Coarse Cut Gauntlets, Engraved Silver Bowl, Silver Chalice, 4Gold 50Silver (Total 8Gold 51Silver 25Bronze)

Denerim Market District Tilver has several guards with him. If The Warden is a wordsmith (high coercion), it is possible to "talk" their way into stealing the key; otherwise, stealth plus stealing will work if your stealing capability is high enough. The sure bet, though, is to use the nearby messenger boy - he can be paid 10 Silver to distract the guards, allowing you to approach Tilver and steal the key without requiring top-level stealing. Once you have thye key, unlock the two chests in the central bazaar of the Denerim Market District.
Steal the Teyrn's Crown (only available during the Landsmeet) Seneschal 6Gold Teyrn Loghain's Crown Teyrn Loghain's Crown 12Gold Gnawed Noble Tavern

Option 1: Enter the Seneschal's room to trigger a dialogue with the guards. The Warden can intimidate the guards to leave or fight. However, if you fight the guards immediately, Seneschal will also be killed, preventing you from acquiring the second crown as described in the exploit below. If you do not attack when you first enter the room, you can intimidate the Seneschal into giving up the crown.

Exploit: To acquire a second crown either choose to attack him after you intimidate him into giving you the crown ( if you choose to kill him, the guards will remain and will attack you) and loot his corpse or pickpocket him. Note that this exploit appears to be fixed on the PS3, so if you want the crown and XP, attack.

Option 2: Leave the party behind and have a character enter with Stealth. If not detected, the stealthed character can steal the crown off the Seneschal. Stealth is hardcoded to drop after a pickpocket attempt, but the guards will no longer be hostile and cannot be made hostile in dialogue.

Option 3: Have the waitresses incapacitate the guards. Pay 3 Gold to get the guards another round of drinks or 5 Gold for the strongest liquor. Alternatively, with sufficient Poison skill, spike the drinks. Afterwards, retrieve the crown from the Seneschal or sneak in and steal the crown.

Burglaries

Quest Name Initial Cost Item(s) Location Walkthrough
The Absent Mistress 1 Gold Deep Mushroom, Diamond, Silk Carpet, 2 Gold Gnawed Noble Tavern - Lady Sophie's Room Can be completed before talking to Slim, which causes Slim to apologise and return the 1 Sovereign.
A Fistful of Silver 4 Gold Silver Bar Silver Bars (x6)
1Gold 50Silver each
Market Warehouse Market Warehouse is just past the Wonders of Thedas. It is possible to retreat to the northeast corner quickly, then cast Storm of the Century near the southwest corner near the quest-marked containers. This should keep the party out of the radius of the Storm while clearing most of Howe's archers and anyone who fails to run out of it quickly enough.
The Private Collector 10 Gold (Returned afterwards) None Bann Franderel's Manor After accepting, a new location will be added to the Denerim City Map. Travel there, and it will soon become obvious that things are awkward. Blaze a trail back to Slim, and he will apologize profusely, return the initial fee, and promise to make up for it. Afterwards, he vanishes, only to return later.
Bug icon Bug! pcpc (Patch 1.04) Sometimes, the money will not return after you talk to Slim, the quest will not undone and cannot continue to The Tears of Andraste quest. -> Try going in Arl Eamon's Estate, then outside again and start conversation with Slim.
The Tears of Andraste None The Tears of Andraste 10 Gold Bann Franderel's Manor Not available until after the Landsmeet. The quest involves going back to the previous location, stealing the Tears, and then either giving them to the Chantry (anonymously) or keeping them. Using subtlety to stealth in and poison the guards' drinks is an option.

Result

The total expenditure is 15 Gold 50 Silver not including the penultimate burglary's cost and the total profit can be over 35 Gold. This profit is even higher for Dwarf Nobles who sell to Gorim. There is no major effect on the storyline.

Trivia

In Dragon Age: Awakening, Varel will speak of a 'Dark Wolf' that has caused troubles amongst nobles. If you have completed this quest, you have the option of saying "(Lie) Dark Wolf? Never heard of him/her." This is because you are him/her, as Slim will mention after your successful burglaries or pickpocketing that "some are even calling you the Dark Wolf."

After having completed the original break in on Bann Franderels manor and returning the second time you can hear two guards talking eventually one says "and not a single one lived to tell the tale" even if you snuck in and out whilst leaving some alive.

Bugs

  • If you get the stealing skill after talking to Slim, you will not get the other quests. Confirmed on PC with 1.05 patch as of November 2011.
  • If you are on this quest and try to approach either the Seneschal or the Blackstone Irregulars' Box, the guards will always detect you whether you have poisoned their drinks, paid for expensive liquor, or if you are stealthed. You will return to the room's entrance and enter combat. On PC v1.02, this bug can still be exploited to obtain two copies of the crown--when forced into battle with the Seneschal after poisoning, a message is received that you picked up the crown from his sleeping (poisoned) body, but then a second copy can be looted from his body after he falls in battle.
  • If you defeat the guards in battle, sometimes the doors will lock and trap you inside. picking the lock is not possible, though clicking on the Blackstone Irregular's chest seems to rectify this issue.
  • On the PC patch 1.03 and on Xbox patch 1.04 after going to the Bann Franderel's Manor the first time, rather than returning your gold Slim mentions that the guards are looking for whomever raided Arl Howe's home. If you ask him if he knows any good places to break in you will exit the conversation.
  • You can begin Stealing the Teyrn's crown after the landsmeet, even if you decided to kill Teyrn Loghain, despite slim mentioning that the crown was there to be prepared for the landsmeet.
    • Update: Speaking to Eamon and beginning the Landsmeet will fix the problem. On Xbox, just entering and exiting Eamon's estate will fix it.
  • You can steal 2 Swords from Ser Nancine ; first talk to her and choose the steal option in dialogue, and then by using the Steal command on her afterwards.
  • Sometimes if you go back to Slim right after getting ambushed on the third quest he'll bug back into saying his lines from the second quest and not give you your money back, or disappear. This is fixed if you leave Denerim and come back later.
  • Ser Nancine may not give you the 2 gold she promises even if you pass the herbalism and persuasion check. A reload seems to have no effect either.
  • Bann Franderel's Estate does not count towards the Traveller Achievement xbox360xbox360 or the Amount of Dragon Age Origins Complete (listed in the Accomplishments section of your journal.
  • If you use the messenger boy to distract the guards, then the The Trial of Crows quest will be triggered even if you have not seen the cutscence where Zevran first appears.
