A Commander of the Grey, or Warden-Commander for short, is a national leader of Grey Wardens. Few ranks are higher in the Wardens' Order, for they stand just a few steps below the First Warden, leader of all the Grey Wardens. Although the First Warden is the leader of the organization, each nation's Wardens are for the most part autonomous; the Commanders are free to act as they see fit.
Background[]
Warden-Commanders are usually appointed by the First Warden, but in a few instances a Warden is appointed to this rank by the acclamation of his or her peers, and usually the First Warden just defers to this decision and makes it official.[1]
Involvement[]
Duncan, the Commander of the Grey in Ferelden, is the one who recruits the Warden. Following the Fifth Blight the Wardens are given control of the Arling of Amaranthine with Fereldan's Warden-Commander acting as Arl/Arlessa.
Depending on whether The Warden survived the slaying of the Archdemon during the climax of Dragon Age Origins, he/she may later be promoted to Commander of the Grey of Ferelden, or a new Commander of the Grey may be chosen from the ranks of the Orlesian Wardens to lead the rebuilt Ferelden Order and takes up their post at Vigil's Keep, if the Warden sacrificed their life to end the Blight.
Warden-Commander Clarel was in charge of the Orlesian Wardens during the siege of Adamant Fortress.
