Searching reveals nearby loot, codex entries, and crafting nodes.
XBox 360/XBox One...
When the compass pulses, press LS to search.
PC...
When the compass pulses, press [V] to search.
PS3/PS4...
When the compass pulses, press L3 to search.
Searching indicates the direction of hidden objects with an additional pulse on the ground and, if you're close enough, reveals them.
