Duchess Clarisse de Montfort was a member of House De Montfort. She was the wife of Grand Duke Reynaud Valmont and mother to Empress Celene.
Background[]
Clarisse married Grand Duke Reynaud, the youngest brother of Emperor Florian. She was also the cousin of Duke Prosper de Montfort. In 9:04 Dragon, Clarisse gave birth to a daughter, Celene.[1] Clarisse was close to Prosper, and she and her husband would often include him in their dining parties.[2] Clarisse had Dowager Marquise Mantillon raise Celene and teach her the ways of the Game. The Duchess hoped that Celene would one day succeed her uncle, Emperor Florian, to the Orlesian throne.
After the death of Emperor Florian in 9:19 Dragon, Duke Bastien de Ghislain supported his son-in-law's claim to the throne. In 9:20 Dragon, Duke Bastien's daughter, Calienne, arranged for Clarisse's assassination and framed it as a hunting accident, although many suspected foul play.[3][4]
Duke Prosper was deeply upset by Clarisse's assassination and wept openly upon learning of her death, promising Celene and Prince Reynaud any support he could offer to avenge his cousin.[5] He also swore off hunting forever, though this pledge lasted only five weeks.[3] In retaliation, he personally accompanied Grand Duke Reynaud when he paid a visit to the de Ghislain estate to arrange for Calienne to have a hunting accident of her own. Reynaud succeeded in assassinating Calienne but was poisoned in the process. He died soon after, leaving Celene an orphan.[6]
