There is a bug, though, that could settle the means between defeat and victory. You should have someone with the sleep spell, a character with the taunt ability and a bowman. Cast sleep on her and the guards and make your party escape into the library. After your in the library, wait for Cauthrien. You will notice none of her guards is pursuing you with her. Now, use the character with the taunt ability. Taunt her into running after you so that you will keep her away from your party who is busily unloading bolts and arrows at her. Run around the library and then use taunt again. Keep doing this until she is killed by one of your party's arrows. Until then, the guards should be more easy to defeat.

You're out-numbered, so do whatever you can to even the odds, have one mage cast sleep/mass paralize(cc and aoe spells) on archers then kill the mage asap, another mage to focus on Cauthrien, if you have the spells, debuff her with hexes and allow warriors to finish her off and her sidekicks quickly; Death hex and Misdirection and she is toast, after getting  rid of the key opponents the archers are easy pickings, as long as you watch your parties health.

If you are successful in fighting her, The Summer Sword is gained. If you surrender or simply lose the fight, you will be taken to Fort Drakon as a prisoner. If this happens, she is met again at the Landsmeet. It appears she wishes to fight you to stop you from interfering with Loghain. However, it is possible to persuade her to let you by without a fight. It seems even she has seen the corruption of Loghain.

Strategy

Cauthrien is one of the hardest bosses in the game. Use extreme cautio

Having Wynne, lots of lyrium potions, and TONNES of health poultices are crucial in the battle. It would be helpful to have the others be close-range fighters. Ser Cauthrien will have several guards and a mage backing her up. Ser Cauthrien is a heavy hitter so dispatch of her as soon as you can. Keep Wynne out of the range of the archers and she should be fine.
