Shields[]

Why are unique shields listed under the unique weapons category? Mostlyautumn (talk) 18:26, August 14, 2012 (UTC)

They are listed as "weapons" in Dragon Age II. We only have two sub-categories for unique equipment (for now), and it'd be technically incorrect to list it as armor. ··· D-day sig d·day! 23:11, August 16, 2012 (UTC)
I believe the decision to put them in the weapons inventory category was made because shields occupy the left weapon slot. That doesn't mean we should follow the same convention. Shields are armor, their main stat is armor (not damage). Base item for shields is named "Equipment - Armor - Shield" in the game files (itm_base.gda). They are also listed under armor in DAO articles. They are not listed under weapons here – Template:Equipment_(Dragon_Age_II) and here – Item ID codes (Dragon Age II).
If you still think it's a bad idea to categorize unique shields under unique armor then at least this category should be renamed to "unique weapons and shields" to avoid confusion. Mostlyautumn (talk) 07:58, August 17, 2012 (UTC)
Given your explanations, I see no problems with not following the game convention in that case. I can start moving the shields to "Dragon Age II unique armor" (or generic) unless there's any further comments regarding this.
In regards to the template, this falls within the user to change it. Previously, we used to list shields under its own category for the DAO navbox template until another user pointed it out it should go elsewhere. In that case, shields for DA2 should be moved to the armor section. ··· D-day sig d·day! 18:27, August 27, 2012 (UTC)
I have an alternate suggestion, but please do not interpret this as an objection to Mostlyautumn's proposal in any way whatsoever. If given the choice between categorization as weapon or an armor, I'd go with armor, even if that isn't how it is handled within the game.
In my opinion, shields are rather unique in the sense that they are used both offensively and defensively. There are valid points to consider on both sides, either as armor or as a weapon. I think that categorizing shields as both could be valid, but that would also be confusing and add needless complications. What I'd suggest a third main category for shields, with no connection to either weapons nor armor, such as:

Dragon Age II shields
Dragon Age II unique shields
Dragon Age II generic shields
