Throughout the Warden's journey through Ferelden, party companions can engage in any sorts of dialogue. This is generally a random encounter which does not interrupt gameplay. There are a few locations that trigger dialogue, such as the bridge in the Orzammar Commons or the exit from the Dalish camp. Generally it does not happen while in combat (except their battle dialogue) and will end upon entering combat.
