Carinus is the legendary founder of the Grey Wardens.[1]

Background

BioWare canon
The following information is only mentioned in Dragon Age Tabletop. Certain portions of this media may no longer reflect currently established lore.

During the First Blight, the people did not at first connect the rising contamination of the earth with the coming of the darkspawn. Carinus, a leader of a band of knights and soldiers from the Anderfels and across the Imperium, grew increasingly certain about the connection. In -305 Ancient (890 TE), at Weisshaupt Fortress, they renounced their allegiances and formed the Order of the Grey Wardens, deciding that purging the lands of darkspawn would also reverse the effects of the blight. It is said that they shamed Tevinter with their courage in hunting Dumat even while their own families died. They were also searching for the more effective way to fight which ultimately led to the discovery of the Joining ritual and proved instrumental in the ending of the Blight.[2][3]

While the stories of Carinus' travels to recruit allies are part of the Order's legend, they may be little more than fables. Not all scholars even acknowledge his existence.[3]
