Lady Calienne de Ghislain was the daughter of Duke Bastien de Ghislain, who was head of the Council of Heralds and of House De Ghislain, and the wife of Grand Duke Gaspard de Chalons.

Background[]

Calienne was born to Duke Bastien and Duchess Nicoline de Ghislain. As a member of a powerful noble family, she learned the ways of the Game. She would always carry a poisoned stiletto up her sleeve for self-defense.[1]

Calienne married Grand Duke Gaspard de Chalons, son of Theodore de Chalons and Grand Duchess Melisande. She supported her husband's claim to succeed his uncle, Emperor Florian, to the Orlesian throne. When Emperor Florian died in 9:19, the country was almost thrown into civil war as there was no clear heir. As her father began to support Gaspard for the throne, Calienne took a more active role in the Game. In 9:20, she arranged for the assassination of Clarisse de Montfort, who was the mother of Celene Valmont, Gaspard's rival for the throne. Though the murder was disguised as a hunting accident, many people were suspicious.[2]

In retaliation, Clarisse's husband, Reynaud, and cousin, Prosper de Montfort, paid a visit to the Ghislain Estate with plans to arrange for Calienne to have a hunting accident of her own. During the hunting party, Calienne was killed by Grand Duke Reynaud but managed to wound him with her stiletto before she died. He later succumbed to the poison. Gaspard mourned Calienne's death, but although he was angry at Reynaud, he admitted that the Game had been played faithfully by both sides.[1]
