Blighted werewolves are werewolves that have been tainted by darkspawn.

Background[]

When a man in West Hill told me about his encounter with a blighted werewolf, I was inclined to believe him. Although werewolves may be abominations of a sort—wolves possessed by rage demons, or so the story goes—it is true that their bodies still live. The Blight is known to corrupt bears and wolves in addition to humans, elves, and dwarves, so it is conceivable that any living creature, even a werewolf, is at risk.

The man saw the beast ambush a bear, springing from the shadows with such speed that it seemed a blur. The bear was dead within seconds.

I thank the Maker that I have never even seen a run-of-the-mill werewolf. I am sure I never want to encounter one that is blighted.

—From In Pursuit of Knowledge: The Travels of A Chantry Scholar, by Brother Genitivi[1]

Notes[]

  • In terms of sheer combat difficulty, these uncommon foes rank as one of the most truly deadly enemies in the game.
    • A uniquely deadly combination characterizing the "darkspawn werewolf" sub-type is an emphatic use of Overwhelm with Stealth, particularly in massed group attacks, resulting in incredibly speedy death for a level-30 rogue or mage, even with 400+ HP and 20 Armor. On Nightmare Difficulty, a Two-Handed Oghren, Level 30 and possessing 707 Health and 60 Armor, died an inglorious death in mere milliseconds, victim of a mass chain-overwhelm siege by blighted werewolves - no Indomitable, no Magi Life Ward, etc. even gave the poor dwarf the slightest chance. One can only hope to somehow interrupt the blighted shadow wolf attack-sequence hyper-vigilantly and quickly, and/or attempt rapidly ingesting health-remedies or Healing, will somehow help conceivably, if executed almost super-humanly in terms of fine-tuned speed.
    • The standard impact-heavy concussive-type skills permitting dislodgement from enmeshment in an attack-behavior fail miserably in the case of the chain-overwhelm unleashed by rogue darkspawn werewolves - only a very small number of counter-measures exist: for the Mage, Force Field and Life Ward can sometimes prevent death, of oneself or comrades; the Rogue Legionnaire-Scout talent, Strength of Stone, fully-upgraded, is relevant; the Warrior Sword and Shield ability, Carapace, fully-upgraded, is decently adequate in preventing death for the duration of 5-9/10 seconds: bluntly, not a whole lot else offers any hope against a vicious, brutally-unavoidable demise, even remotely: if unlucky, and all else fails, repeated deaths having left the player uninterested in 'fairness', one can rely on learning the precise animation priority of certain combat talents; such animation-intensive abilities allow for either a partial or temporary circumvention of a seemingly over-powered, non-sportsmanlike enemy tactic.
