A black wolf is a more aggressive and all-around stronger version of a wolf.

Background[]

The Breach, and the weakened Veil, affected a vast majority of living beings, and of them was the wild wolf. The wolves encountered in the Hinterlands are aggressive and openly attack people, not only in the wild and their habitat, but they venture out into farms and settlements.

The Breach and resulting rifts have caused unprecedented disruptions in the Veil. Such alterations to the environment may account for the unnatural aggression.

If the Herald of Andraste encounters any black wolves, their party members will comment on the wolves acting strangely. Elaina, found on one of the Hinterlands' farms, will express to the Herald her worries about the wolves' strange behaviour, and say that they are posing a big threat to the farmers. She asks the Herald to investigate the cause of the recent wolf aggression.

Acting on Elaina's instructions and finding the wolves' den, it becomes apparent that the wolf pack have become possessed by a terror demon and are led to be violent against their will. Killing the demon releases the wolves from its control.
