Bereskarn are bears which have been tainted by the blight.

Background[]

During a Blight, the corruption of the darkspawn spreads through the wilder areas of Thedas and infects the animals found there. This produces a grotesque, enraged bear called a bereskarn.

Once a bear loses its sentience it becomes a ghoul, similar to that of wolf becoming a blight wolf and a spider becoming a corrupted spider. Bereskarn are slothful creatures when left alone, but fierce and unyielding when they attack. They are often enraged and prodded into battle by the darkspawn.

Tainted bears grow larger and sprout enormous bony spikes that protrude from their fur, causing severe wounds.[1]

The following information is only mentioned in Dragon Age Tabletop. Certain portions of this media may no longer reflect currently established lore.

Blood constantly seeps from these wounds, giving bereskarn a terrifying appearance and a nauseating smell.[2]

Involvement[]

Bereskarn are encountered several times in Dragon Age: Origins. They use the same skills as great bears, but have much higher stats, with increased armor, health, attack and defense.

During the Harrowing endured in the Magi Origins, the Warden encounters a sloth demon in the form of a bereskarn who offers to teach Mouse, a temporary companion, to shapeshift if the Warden can answer three riddles or if the Warden can defeat it in combat.

A Shapeshifter's bear shape will be upgraded to the bereskarn form when the Master Shapeshifter specialization has been unlocked.
