Audacity is a powerful pride demon encountered inside the Pride's End cavern during Dragon Age II.
Involvement[]
Following the events surrounding the disappearance of Tamlen in Dragon Age: Origins, Merrill kept a fragment from the Eluvian encountered in the old ruins in an attempt to cleanse it of its taint. As the years passed she studied elven lore pertaining to Eluvians and was able to extrapolate information from the shard.[1]
Merrill eventually reached out to Marethari Talas, her clan's Keeper for assistance in cleansing the shard but she refused. Her unsuccessful efforts in reconstructing the Eluvian forced her to turn to blood magic—which she had learned from a pride demon that was imprisoned and sundered from the Fade in an idol atop Sundermount. After realizing how much lyrium was needed to cleanse the shard with ordinary magic, she used blood magic to amplify her power ultimately mimicking the Warden's attempt in dealing with the taint. The cleanse proved successful but the reconstruction and activation of the Eluvian did not.
Several years after the Qunari invasion, Merrill finds an alternative to "fixing" the still-inactive Eluvian. She planed to consult with Audacity again—who mentioned several years prior that he witnessed the creation of the mirror itself during the days of Arlathan[2]—and asks Hawke to accompany her to Sundermount as the demon had been silent in her recent attempts to communicate remotely.
As Hawke and Merrill ascend up Sundermount's peak the party runs into Marethari. After a brief exchange Marethari warns Merrill not to seek the demon's help. Upon reaching the "Strange Idol", Merrill is disturbed that the artifact no longer contains the demon. The party uncovers that Marethari had allowed Audacity to possess her to prevent Merrill from repairing the Eluvian.
Marethari informs Merrill that the demon would have gone through the Eluvian once it was restored—choosing Merrill as its intended victim. Audacity then emerges and Hawke's party is forced to kill it, in turn killing Marethari.
