Asha Campana was born in 4:30 Black in Rivain as the daughter of wealthy merchants. Her birth name was Asha Subira Bahadur.
Background
Asha rose within the society and eventually assumed the role of Gana of Ayesleigh. Given the matriarchal nature of much of Rivaini culture, this suggests that the role of Gana is one of authority within the community.[1] Later on, she wed the king of neighboring Antiva, Dario Campana, who was reckoned a weak monarch.
Possessed of a much stronger ambition, Asha desired that her adopted home of Antiva hold a greater position within Thedosian politics. To that end, she wed her children and grandchildren into many of the royal and noble families on the continent. Her bloodline is said to flow through the royals of Orlais, Nevarra, Starkhaven and the Anderfels, as well as within some Magisters of the Tevinter Imperium. As a result, Queen Asha is sometimes referred to by historians as the "Queen Mother of Thedas."[2]
Trivia
- Some elements of Asha Campana's story are probably inspired by Victoria of the United Kingdom. In particular, the nickname "Queen Mother of Thedas" is strikingly similar to Victoria's nickname, "the grandmother of Europe", which she likewise obtained by marrying her children and grandchildren into influential royal families.
