Background

Dragon Age: Origins.

The Anvil was the key to forging golems, however in order to create the golem, a life had to be sacrificed in order to power the construct. Caridin offered the chance to be reforged as a golem to volunteers willing to defend their homeland, with Shayle (Shale) of House Cadash being one of the first and the only woman to volunteer. Eventually however there were no more volunteers and the Darkspawn threat remained pressing. King Valtor, the current king of Orzammar began having prisoners and his political enemies forcibly turned into golems. Caridin refused to co-operate and was transformed into a steel golem for his defiance. However his apprentices lacked the skill to forge a control rod to manipulate him. Caridin sealed the Anvil away in The Deep Roads beyond the reach of Orzammar.

The smiths of Amgarrak Thaig later attempted to recreate Caridin's work with the help of a Tevinter Mage, resulting in a new kind of golem – the Harvester. But a grave error was made and the thaig was ultimately lost to its twisted creations. The Warden-Commander investigates Amgarrak in The Golems of Amgarrak DLC.
