Antiva is officially ruled by a monarchy; in truth, it is a plutocracy ruled by a group of merchant princes—heads of banks, trading companies, and vineyards.[1] The line of kings has remained unbroken for two and a half thousand years, but they hold so little actual power that most people outside of Antiva believe that it has no king at all.[2]
Succession[]
Succession is hereditary. To protect the line of succession, royal bastards may be asked to choose between exile and joining the Antivan Crows.[3] The Crows have frequently played a significant role in dictating the succession in Antiva.[4]
Queen Asha Campana, "the Queen Mother of Thedas," arranged marriages for her children and grandchildren in strategically selected families across Thedas. As a result, the Antivan royalty has familial ties to the Empress of Orlais, the Prince of Starkhaven, the King of Nevarra, and seven of the Dukes of the Anderfels as well as some magisters of the Tevinter Imperium.[5]
