The Antaam Rebellion refers to a series of unsanctioned actions taken by the Antaam of the Qunari, primarily in the form of invasions into Tevinter, Antiva and Rivain.

When the Breach appeared in 9:41 Dragon, members of the Qunari leadership took it as a sign that the human nations' continued inability to curb magic posed an existential threat. Among them was the Viddasala, the leader of the “Dangerous Purpose” branch of the Ben-Hassrath. She led the Dragon's Breath conspiracy: a plot to simultaneously assassinate the leaders of the southern nations to pave the way for the 'bloodless' invasion and conversion of the South.[1] Her plot was first foiled by Solas, then by the Inquisitor, who was made aware of the conspiracy during the Exalted Council by Solas' agents. This led the Viddasala to believe that the Inquisitor was working for Fen'Harel.

Ambassador Josephine Montilyet wrote to the Triumvirate asking for clarification on the recent hostilities. The Inquisitor later found this letter within the Darvaarad, the Viddasala's headquarters. With it, they found several incomprehensible messages in Qunlat and a letter from the Triumvirate that had been torn open and crumpled. The Triumvirate denied all knowledge of the Viddasala's actions and stated that no military action had been approved against the Inquisition. However, the legitimacy of the letter is hard to verify, as it was found within the Viddasala's headquarters, which could indicate that it was intercepted or even forged.[2]

With the death of the Viddasala at Solas' hands and the end of the Dragon's Breath plot, the Qunari retreated north. Shortly after the Exalted Council, they launched new attacks against Tevinter, catching the Imperium off guard.[3]

By 9:44-9:45 Dragon,[4][5] Rasaan, the Ariqun's long ago chosen successor and the advisor to the Arishok, had taken control of the Antaam.[6] Under her leadership, the Antaam launched an unsanctioned invasion into Tevinter, first targeting the city of Ventus.

VentusFall

The fall of Ventus

Rumors that war was imminent prompted many in the city to flee.[7] When the Qunari finally struck, their attack was swift and brutal. In less than a day, the city had fallen to the Antaam. Some people managed to escape as the city fell, aided by Dorian Pavus of the Inquisition.[8] Anyone wearing armor was cut down while mages were rendered into mindless husks with qamek then paraded through the streets. Among the civilian population, women, children and the elderly were allowed to return to their homes while the men were separated into groups and put into work camps.[9]

However, without the support of the other Qunari–workers, Tamassrans, Ben-Hassrath etc.–the invasion showed signs of disorganization. Furthermore, rumors that the Antaam had not acted in accordance with the Qun in Ventus prompted an investigation from the Ben-Hassrath. The invasion also drew the concern of other groups, such as a nearby clan of Dalish elves and the Antivan Crows, who sent spies to investigate. Thantiel and Strife of the Dalish found that the Qunari had plans to invade Rivain and sent word to the other clans so they could prepare while Andarateia Cantori and Viago De Riva confirmed that the Antaam acted without the approval of the other branches.[9][10]

The lack of support from priests and workers also meant the loss of their moderating influence. Without the other Qunari to hold them back, the Antaam crushed the Tevinter opposition, prompting fear that the eastern Imperium would fall to the Qunari within the year.[11]

The Antaam spread westward from Ventus into the Imperium, capturing Carastes, then Neromenian. The invasion of Neromenian was as brutal as the invasion of Ventus, with some civilians cut down as they fled by the Antaam and children captured to be reeducated and raised into the Qun. As they had in Ventus, the Antaam also took the time to seek out particularly powerful magisters. The Antaam sent a team into Castellum Tenebris to take out Magister Nenealeus and stop him from creating a soldier strong enough to turn the tide of the war.[12]

The Antaam eventually spread all the way to Vyrantium, laying the city under siege.[13]

Before invading Antiva, the Antaam attempted to hobble the leadership of the Antivan Crows, one of Antiva's only line of defense against invasion given the relative weakness of their army. They approached Emil Kortez, Fourth Talon of the Antivan Crows, asking him to eliminate the other seven Talons in exchange for a peaceful invasion and the promise that Antiva wouldn't be made to submit to the Qun. After successfully killing three Talons, Kortez was found out and executed for his betrayal by the remaining four. Disbelieving the Antaam's promise of a peaceful invasion, they began to formulate a plan to slow down the invasion.[10]

As We Fly

The Antivan Crows

The Antaam first captured the northern city of Treviso. As the leader of the occupation, Butcher Daathrata ruled the city through fear, using old magical devices to repeat daily commands to kneel and obey. The Antivan Crows within the city led resistance efforts, taking contracts to kill the Butcher's lieutenants and destroy his strange weapons.[14]

The Antaam also planned to move into Rivain. Said plans were recovered by the Dalish, and used to warn the clans to move out of the Antaam's reach.[9]

While Kont-aar, the only Qunari settlement on the main continent, was still uninvolved in the hostilities, agents of Fen'Harel conspired to destroy the city and blame it on a Tevinter altus. The purpose of this plot was to force the Ben-Hassrath to join in the war, and create enough animosity that nothing less than the total destruction of Tevinter would have satisfied the Qunari. The plot was foiled, with barely any damage done to the city.[15]

After Solas interfered with the Dragon's Breath plan, Rasaan led an investigation in the Silent Plains in search for his true name, as she claimed that neither Solas nor Fen'Harel were accurate. Agents of Fen'Harel continued to interfere with the Qunari.
