“You keep your head down and say 'aye' to any job I decide is low enough for scum like you.”

Anor[1] Beraht is the leader of the Carta, a powerful criminal organisation, on the eve of the Fifth Blight. He is a member of the Merchant caste and legally owns a shop in the Commons.[2] He is encountered in the Dwarf Commoner Origin.

Beraht employs many casteless dwarves, who generally join his ranks out of desperation. The Dwarf Commoner and Leske work for Beraht as hired muscle, intimidating and killing those who cross their boss. Beraht has also invested money into women like Elsye and Rica Brosca, the Dwarf Commoner's half-sister, to turn them into noble hunters–women who try to seduce noble men and bear them a son. As a son would take on his noble father's caste, with the mother and her immediate family moving to the noble's estate to care for the child, Beraht hopes that one of his noble hunters will be successful in order to elevate his status alongside them by passing himself off as the child's uncle.

Under Beraht's leadership, the Carta once stole a gold statuette of House Bemot's Paragon and forced Sigrun to hide the stolen item in Mischa's shop, where she worked at the time. Sigrun agreed after Beraht threatened to have Mischa killed if she refused to do his bidding. The statuette was eventually discovered; Mischa was blamed for the theft and exiled to the surface.[3][4]

Beraht also has strong ties with several Mining families and thus gets a share in the profits of all the lyrium that is exported from Orzammar.

Jarvia, his top lieutenant in the Carta, is also his lover.

Beraht tasks both the Dwarf Commoner and Leske with dealing with a smuggler that's holding out on him. Once that is dealt with, Beraht tasks them with rigging a Glory Proving by drugging Mainar to secure victory for Everd because Lord Vollney has made an illegal bet of 100Gold on Everd and works with Beraht to make sure that Everd wins the match.

Complications arise when the two casteless dwarves find Everd profoundly inebriated and irretrievably horizontal, forcing the Dwarf Commoner to disguise themself as Everd and take his place in the arena. Though "Everd" wins the matches and reaches the finals, the duplicity is subsequently exposed, leading to a massive scandal while the Proving is declared invalid. Lord Vollney loses a hundred sovereigns on the bet, and an angry Beraht orders Jarvia to rebuke Leske and the Dwarf Commoner as they languish in prison.

The downtrodden duo however manages to escape from their cells and confront Beraht in his chambers, slaying the crime-lord while leaving the Carta temporarily with no leader.

If the protagonist is not of Dwarf Commoner Origin, however, it is unclear how Beraht died as Leske can still be found locked up in his cell when they visit Orzammar as part of A Paragon of Her Kind quest.
