Anders is an escaped mage from the Circle of Magi and is a confirmed companion for Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening.

Background

As an adolescent he was taken to the Circle Tower by the templars, which he despised as he compared it to a prison. He's a very talented mage and has escaped from the tower many times, only to be captured and brought back by the templars. Despite accusations that he is a Maleficar, he is only an apostate and wants nothing more than to be free. He is seen fighting templars and then greets the player with an "I didn't do it", which may have something to do with his past. His style and manner bears much resemblance to that of Alistair, showing a rather laid-back and care-free attitude. During the Awakening trailer he is seen drinking from a chalice as a voice over says "Join Us", meaning that The Warden can put Anders through the Joining.

Involvement

Anders is found during the opening quest to regain Vigil's Keep, he has killed many Darkspawn but he may have also slaughtered some Templar also (this remains unclear). You can ask him to join you and he will do so.

He is a powerful healer, much like Wynne in the DAO but with a different personality, combined with Mhairi he makes the opening confrontations of the game simple due to his effective healing.

After the opening quest is completed you can choose to make him undergo the joining ritual, if you do so he will survive and become a member of your party.
