Amell family crest
The Amell family originates from Kirkwall, and are nobility there.
History
Lord Aristide Amell was one of the most wealthy and influential men in Kirkwall, known for the opulent balls he would host at his mansion. Following the arrest of Lord Viscount Perrin Threnhold by the city's templars, it was universally agreed that Lord Amell would succeed Threnhold as Viscount. Indeed, it was agreed by the templars that the Amells were worthy successors, however, misfortune struck when Aristide's niece, Revka, gave birth to a mage child. Since the ascension of a family "tainted" by magical blood would have been a scandal, Marlowe Dumar was appointed Viscount instead.
Since that day, the fortunes of the Amells soured. Fausten succeeded his father to become scion of the Amells, though he nearly bankrupted the family paying to get charges of of smuggling dropped for one Damion Amell. Lord Fausten had two children, Leandra and Gamlen.
Leandra was the apple of her parents' eyes, though she brought shame on the family when she brought more magic into the line. She eloped with a Fereldan apostate, Malcolm Hawke, and had three children by him, who were raised in Ferelden.
With Leandra gone, Gamlen Amell cared for the ageing Lord and Lady Amell through a wasting sickness and three bouts of cholera. When they finally passed away, Gamlen became the new Amell lord.
Lord Gamlen proved ill suited to the position however, marrying a commoner, Mara, with whom he had one daughter, Charade. Mara left Gamlen without ever informing him of his child. Lord Gamlen quickly gambled, drank, and whored the once vast Amell fortune away. Left with no other option, he sold the once proud family mansion to slavers to pay off his debts, and was forced into a Lowtown hovel.
The Fifth Blight struck Ferelden in 9:30 Dragon, three years after the death of Leandra's husband. Her children and her fled, and it was Leandra who guided them to Kirkwall. Unfortunately, one of her children was killed by an ogre before ever reaching their mother's homeland.
Upon the family's arrival in Kirkwall, Leandra was shocked to discover the state Gamlen had fallen into. Matters went from bad to worse however, when Gamlen sold the Hawke children into indentured servitude. The Hawke's served their term for a year, with Leandra Hawke and her children lived with Gamlen in his cramped house.
Fortune struck, however, when the Hawke siblings learned of their uncle's misdeeds, and kicked the slavers out of their ancestral home. Leandra Hawke arranged a meeting with Viscount Dumar to ask for the mansion back. The eldest of the Hawke siblings financed a Deep Roads expedition, which made them rich, and provided them with the funds to buy back the Amell family home.
Later that year, Leandra Hawke was abducted by an insane serial killer, and murdered by him. The head of the family was now her eldest child, who was later declared Champion of Kirkwall for defeating the Qunari which had started a war in the city.
Viscount Dumar was killed in the conflict, and so Meredith Stannard, Knight-Commander of the city's templars became Kirkwall's steward. Once again there was increasing clamour among the Kirkwall nobility for the Amells (or Hawkes, whose name was adopted) to hold the office of Viscount.
The re-discovered success of the Amells was to last this time it seemed. Following the brutal annulment of the Kirkwall Circle during the Second Battle of Kirkwall, the nobility and templars alike practically begged Hawke to become viscount, a post which they in the end accepted.
Once again, the Amells collapsed at their peak. Hawke saved the mages of Kirkwall from death at the the hands of the templars, and was forced to flee the city, seemingly disappearing from the face of the earth.
