Everytime I played it again I was mean and nice to different characters just for the fun of it but with Merrill I can’t help but be nice and protective over her 😆

I generally rival her. It's not to be mean, it's to teach that she's wrong. That she doesn't know what she's doing and she's in over her head.
That seems to be the gist of the whole friend-rival system. Do you want your companion to be/do this, or be/do that?
DAO's hardening system seemed to work in a similar function.
Can I agree with both Everhardt AND Daimz88 depending on the type of Hawke I want to be at the time?
I'm the same way, but with her and Fenris. Merrill may make some dumb decisions, but I can't help but baby her, she is trying her best.
Merrill isn't some stupid child. She doesn't need Hawke as teacher, but a friend. She got enough lesson from Marethari, who ended as possessed by Audacity.
Babying someone means being affectionate and emotional with them, not treating them like a child.
Merrill is a fresh wind compared with other three LIs. She doesn't keep breathing hatred and anger toward what you or your family are, like Fenris does. Nor does she manipulate and deceive you like Anders or Isabela. You know exactly what she is doing, what she wants, wha you are signing into.
Just like you say, I can't be harsh to her. She is also, IMO, the most mature of all LIs. It's laughable trying to babysit her, cause It's incredibly presumptuous to do that to someone who knows very well her life's goal and meaning.
Trying to change an adult's beliefs is always some sort of fool's errand, IMO. But if Hawke really has that much time to waste, perhaps (s)he should try the babysitting nonsense on other three LIs, they need it much more.
Why would Anders need to change his beliefs? Okay, maybe he's too rigid Andrastian Circle Mage he can be more flexible about spirits/demons, and blood magic... he would be able to forget his fear, he maybe made justice demon. But he's pure right about the Circles.
He just should listen Merrill...
Who says Anders need to change his beliefs? And God know I won't mind to see Elthina and her kind have a Himmelfahrt sooner or later.
But Anders, or rather Anders & Justice, needs to be watched over because their decision making. Anders and Justice are never good at making sound plans, as it could be easily seen in DAA. Many say they change during these years, I disagree. They are essentially the same as before, that means their weakness remains. Merging into one being doens't make them smarter. They still make bad plans. Trying to deceive Hawke is easily the worst and could do tremendous damage to their cause.
Nor that their other plans work well. Trying to smuggle Karl out: Failed. Mage Underground: Failed. And these might just be part of his failures over years. I would say it's reasonable to assume he needs more supervision than Merrill.
Merrill works on ONE mirror – Anders works against a whole system.
He failed Karl: he was too late.
He didn't fail the Mage Underground – he helped a lot. If you say: Anders failed the Mage Underground, you can say: Merrill failed Marethari, Pol and her clan – but not.
Anders became "smarter" with Justice (not really smarter, but braver, stronger – he didn't merge with Justice because he was not smart enough): he already recognized, he CAN change the system, and was determined to do it... Justice strengthened him.
What do you think?
