^Origins's combat is meant to be strategic, not high action button-mashy. DA 2 sped up the combat while still trying to be strategic, thereby ruining it. Inquisition ditched the strategy in favor of action, which is much more enjoyable than DA 2's half-baked action/strategy hybrid.
All the various "options" for the Inquisitor don't amount to much. All of my Inquisitors feel like more or less the same person. Or I should say, lack of a person. Whereas Hawke has three personalities, and the Warden has dozens.
I must play Dragon Age like probably every 6th month i totally love thise games, i played each many times (tooo many) and i still can find something new in each gameplay. In my ranking Origins is on the top followed by Inqusition and very close by 2. Each game have something unique. Im glad that i find those game 3 years ago :D
Origins by a mile. It was by far the grittiest and most realistic, and didn’t shy away from dark stuff. Plus, I liked being able to kill your character within their game. Hawke dying in the Fade was far less dramatic and didn’t even leave much of an impact.
Inquisition really toned things down, which didn’t appeal to me as much. But it’s way better than DA2. It adapted the old characters much better, especially Morrigan. DA2 crammed characters where they didn’t belong and changed them for no reason. Anders honestly has the worst character derailment I’ve ever seen, besides Luke Skywalker in TLJ. The only thing they kept about Awakening Anders is his ponytail and the occasional mention of a cat. Just make a new character at that point...
If you think Anders6Justice is different character, then you didn't listen Anders and Justice in Awakening.
Surprisingly consistent, despite Anders and Justice were written by Gaider in Awakening, and Anders/Justice was written by Hepler in DA2.
I mean, the writers themselves have pretty much admitted that DA2 was a dud. I think Gaider himself once said that he should have written Anders instead of Hepler. The game was so rushed that everything turned out half-baked and inconsistent. Turning Anders into the broody mess he is in DA2 ruins the fun he is in Awakening. They could have at least tried to make the transition more believable instead of jacking up his personality. Fenris pulls off broody better anyway, lol
^If you think Anders is a different character in DA 2 than he was in Awakening, you are correct. Anders in DA 2 has fused with a spirit of Justice. Of all of the things that can dramatically alter someone's personality, fusing with another being is at the top of the list.
That said, it probably would've been smoother transition if Gaider had written the character.
That doesn’t explain the complete personality reversal. Even in real life, if someone undergoes severe trauma or mental illness, they don’t just “become a different person.” That’s a dishonest and inaccurate portrayal imo. You could argue that Justice is there, but Anders doesn’t just disappear. He’s still in control and has his own memories, desires, etc.
From a story POV, it’s still inconsistent. Jack Sparrow could waltz into the next Pirates movie and declare that he’s an upstanding British citizen now because he spent years at court or a royal academy. That doesn’t justify the creative decision, even if it technically has an explanation.
The idea of Anders fusing with Justice and even spiraling into madness is a fine idea. It was just done poorly. The writers even made a joke once that that he’s Ser Pounce-a-lot in disguise, since the change was so drastic.
Anyway, I don’t wanna get too off-topic here. That was just one of the reasons I didn’t like DA2.
^On that note really quick, Gaider did say he would have liked to make Anders "jokier" in Act 1 and making his transition into broody in Act 2 more subtle.
Okay, but on-topic, my order of favorites are DAO, followed closely by DAI, with DA2 in a comfortable third.
Anders' humour and sarcasm(!) still here in DA2, just watch the banters. Also: in Awakening he spoke about the problems of mages, the Circle, he's very bitter about it. Also, a jokester, a sarcastic person is mostly not taking things easily, and rarely really fun.
His reaction about the word: "apostate" for example absolutely the same. And his reaction about the mages.
The other things, about the changes: he and Justice now share the personality. Justice is very different. We can't ignore that fact.
And he still has desires, strong ones, and his desires are the same as those were in Awakening.
DA2 is rushed, an unpolished diamond. I also see the flaws of Anders/Justice' writing, but Anders/Justice is consistent.
Honestly, they are all amazing in there own ways and playing only one doesn’t do the, story justice and you would really just be missing out on the “dragon-ride” of your life☺️
Happy Hunting,
