What do you think is the most disappointing specialization in DAO and why?
Also Ranger but that’s because I haven’t fiddled with that one yet
Ranger is so good though. Possibly the strongest rogue specilization. The Blight Wolf is basically Dog, so you can essentially have a 5th companion.
Shapeshifter hands down no competition what so ever
The problem with Ranger is that the summons cause you to get less XP, since the summons' kills don't give XP. That doesn't matter in the long run - if you carry the same Warden through Awakening and the post-campaign DLC, you'll hit 35 before Witch Hunt. So there's more than enough XP even with the summons' discount. But it hurts a bit when you first get the skills.
Also I bet there's a mod for the PC version that fixes that.
Ranger cannot be among the worst, as it is just too valid for archer rogues. Is there any archer rogue who does not end up as some combination of Bard/Ranger? :P
In the base game, the other two specs are less than ideal. Assassin passives only trigger on backstabs and Mark of Death has a pretty short range. Duelist's selling point, Pinpoint Strikes, requires an ugly/tedious hack of first switching to melee weapons, then activating the talent, then switching back to (cross)bow in order to work. Bah.
Agreed that Shapeshifter is the worst of the lot.
Ranger is not that bad. Ranger/Assassin (Dual-Wield) works well together. The summoned creature can help the Tank draw the aggro long enough for the rogue to finish the target (and swipe the XP) from behind before moving on to the next. It's also good for some crowd control or to defend the mage.
I feel like they should've fleshed out shapeshifter to be better otherwise I agree with you all
^^^Duelist might not be good for archer rogues, but it's great for dual wield rogues. And the selling point isn't Pinpoint Strike, it's Dueling and Keen Defense.
^ Of course the game is more fond of DW, Bioware in general is. People still play archers, and for archery it is kinda lacking.
On the other hand... Dueling + Keen Defense gives +10 attack and defense. The attack bonus helps when in becomes available at level 7, but a level 14 passive for +10 defense is a bit... low.
Overall, it's shapeshifter for me. The time to change into an animal, the few skills each animal has, and even the forms weren't impressive. Plus, with how powerful mages and their spells are in DAO, I don't see turning into an animal as worth it when you lose the advantages that mages bring to the battlefield.
After that, I personally struggle using the Reaver and Blood Mage specializations due to not being able to find that balance of using your health and not getting killed.
Since we are talking about it, Ranger is one of my all out favorites and a go-to for my second specialization for Leliana (and third for Nathaniel Howe). The extra pet companion can help keep a mage alive while the party fights a tough boss.
What do you think?
